1. Calwell home invasion:

ACT Policing has arrested a 39-year-old Kambah man following an alleged burglary which occurred on Saturday evening (January 1) in Calwell.

Around 11.00pm the alleged offender attended a Calwell home where he forced entry to the residence. Once inside, the offender has stolen a men’s wrist watch and medic alert necklace. The occupants woke to find the man standing in the doorway to their bedroom. The alleged offender then left the residence.

He was located by police a short time later in a nearby street. The alleged offender was arrested and taken to the City Watch House. He will be summonsed to attend the ACT Magistrate’s Court at a later date.

2. Wanniassa Stabbing:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an assault which occurred in the Erindale shopping precinct last night (January 2).

Around 11.30pm a 17-year-old male youth was walking along McBryde Crescent, Wanniassa when he was approached by two men.

The two men, who initially appeared friendly, asked the victim for a cigarette. After telling the men he didn’t have any cigarettes, a physical altercation ensued. During the altercation one of the men stabbed the victim in the forearm.

The victim managed to get away from the two men and was taken to the Canberra Hospital (TCH) by his friends. At the TCH the victim received treatment for a laceration to his forearm sustained in the assault.

The first offender is described as Caucasian, aged in his late teens, about 183cm (6′) tall, with dark brown short hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt and black track-suit pants with white stripes.

The second offender is described as Caucasian, aged in his late teens, about 188cm (6’2″) tall, with blonde shoulder-length hair. He was wearing a light blue shirt and jeans.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the two males matching the above descriptions in the Wanniassa area last night to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

I love these random comments that have nothing to do with the OP. I dare say if you were told it was a civil matter, then it probably was.

miz – i know, i check the afp site fairly regularly, I just meant the normal police reports they release on a regular basis with details of the crime about individual incidents, whether thats because they’re cases they have descriptions of the offenders or whether it’s just because they are more ‘interesting’ due to the suburbs the crimes are committed, no idea, it just seems to be a running trend.

The Dark – again, check out the police website and you will see there is crime everywhere. A quick tally of incidents in December from ACT Policing stats here:

http://www.police.act.gov.au/community-safety/crime-statistics.aspx

City – 386 incidents
Woden – 547
Belco 470
Tuggers 383
Gungahlin 107 (presumably low as most of the population are young children)

It is interesting to note that suburbs with alleged reps, like Charnie and Kambah, have a low crime rate.

Working where I do, I know where the good and bad parts of Canberra are. Jag, you’d be surprised to know just how awful some parts of Red Hill are.

farnarkler/Tooks/miz –

A stab in the dark here (sorry, had too) but could it just be that the suburbs with the worse reps are the ones with more publicized violent crimes?

because it seems most of the crimes that end up in regular police reports are commited within the same couple of suburbs, even though many other crimes are commited (and reported) each day across canberra.

Does anoyone here know why that is?

That Calwell guy was caught basically right outside my house, he screamed the whole street down when they caught him, so much drama – highlight of my life

Move Thugeranong to Casks Estate or Quangers that’ll solve the problem at least the offenders will get a prison term not a ‘sorry to inconvenience you’ if they appear in Quangers Court

Farnarkler, what’s your point? Check out ACT Policing’s website and see for yourself that, while there are losers everywhere, there was plenty of crime all over Canberra. Eg, man stabbed at Hawker, ag rob at Kippax, copper theft and 2 arrests at Belco Mall between 20 and 24 December.

As I’ve said before, these ‘reputations’ are rubbish – people just like to validate their own choices of where THEY live.

Hmmm Wanniassa, Kambah, Calwell. How………..typical

Have a look at the crime stats by suburb. You might actually be surprised.

And no trouble happens where you live farnarkler? Of course, you must live in Fadden…no trouble there, or maybe O’Malley?? Oops, sorry, must be a Red Hill resident.

Hmmm Wanniassa, Kambah, Calwell. How………..typical.

Thugeranong is a fair way from Oaks Estate…

So sick of these caucasians – trouble makers, the lot of them.

I hear those MedicAlert bracelets are forged from a secret hoard of unobtainium alloy, chosen for its famed anti-oxidant properties — can’t have it rusting now, can we? Must be worth thousands!

A brand new year, same old nut jobs out on the streets….
