1. Wasted in Weston:

A 33-year-old unlicenced driver from Weston caught with one of the highest recent readings recorded in the ACT will be summonsed to court.

About 4pm on Sunday, August 29 Woden Patrol members stopped the male on Heysen Street, Weston and performed a roadside screening test on the male driver which returned a positive result.

The male was conveyed to Woden Police Station where he returned a breathalyser reading of 0.309 grams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

The 33-year-old does not hold a licence and is subject to Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.02. He has been summonsed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

In the week between August 23 – August 30, police apprehended 29 drink-drivers in the ACT. Eleven of the 29 drivers are subject to special conditions (such as provisional or probationary) which restricted them to a BAC of 0.02. The highest reading for a 0.02 licence was 0.309 and the highest for a 0.05 licence was 0.277.

ACT Policing Acting Superintendent Jeff Knight said: “It is completely unacceptable that members in our community are not getting the message about drinking and driving.”

“With the road toll at its highest in recent years people need to realise the dangers of drinking and then getting behind the wheel of a car and the enormous danger it poses to themselves and other members of our community.”

2. Cruising Thuggies:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an attempted robbery which occurred on Barr Smith Avenue, Bonython yesterday morning (Monday August 30).

About 11.10am yesterday the 16-year-old male victim was walking toward a bus stop on Barr Smith Avenue, Bonython when a car pulled up next to him and the occupants asked him for the time. The youth provided the time and was then asked to give them his bag.

The youth refused and ran away, but was followed by the car in and out of several streets for a period of time. The victim saw the car again when it pulled up beside him on another street, this time the driver producing a knife.

Again the youth refused to provide his property and ran away, losing sight of the vehicle.

The vehicle is described as an older style boxy sedan, red/brown in colour, with no registration plates and lots of scratches and marks.

There were four male occupants in the vehicle, who all appeared to be aged over 18 years, with the driver wearing a black cap pulled down over his face. The front passenger had short blond hair.

Anyone who may be able to assist police with the investigation are asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

Agreed! Corporal punishment sounds good. A public flogging? Please?

If he does not hold a license how is he subject to a 0.02 limit?

Cos them’s the rules.

If he does not hold a license how is he subject to a 0.02 limit?

And, why is he not locked up? He has proven he can not be trusted to follow the law and he will likely do the same again. What happens when he hits a car full of children and kills them?

Unlicensed drivers, especially drunk ones should be locked up. There is no other way to stop them.

0.309. I’m surprised he even knew what a car was at that level of intoxication.
