1. Pissed, 16, and driving:

ACT Policing has apprehended a learner driver after he was caught with a blood alcohol content (BAC) allegedly ten times over the legal limit in Latham today (July 31).

Around 4am police were conducting a traffic stop on Ginninderra Drive when they pulled over a Nissan Navara utility carrying two male youths.

The driver of the vehicle, a 16-year-old male, produced a current ACT learner driver’s license. He was accompanied by a 17-year-old male who holds a current ACT provisional driver’s license.

The 16-year-old driver was conveyed to Belconnen Police Station where he allegedly recorded a BAC of 0.201; ten times over the legal limit for a learner driver.

Given the alleged offender’s age and level of intoxication, he was transferred into the custody of a parent. He will be summonsed to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

This incident comes after ACT Policing has released its graphic display Real Decisions, Real Consequence highlighting the results of speeding, drink-driving and reckless behaviour to new drivers.

Sergeant Erin Pobar from ACT Policing’s Traffic Operations said this behaviour is disgraceful.

“This incident shows that young people in our community are not taking seriously the consequences of drink driving. Our campaign currently touring ACT Colleges clearly demonstrates that drink driving can easily lead to death, imprisonment or serious injury,” Sgt Pobar said.

“If you drink and drive, you will be caught.”

2. Verity Lane – where so many find the cold, hard truth:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an assault which occurred at the Mooseheads Pub and Nightclub in Civic today (July 31).

Around 1am police found a 23-year-old Jerrabomberra man in Verity Lane, Civic receiving first aid treatment from the venue’s security staff.

It was established the man had been upstairs, inside the nightclub, when he was struck to the left side of his head with a broken glass.

ACT Ambulance attended the scene and conveyed the man to Calvary Hospital for further treatment. He had sustained three lacerations in the area of his ear, all requiring stitches. He was later released from hospital.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the assault or suspicious persons in the nightclub this morning to contact Crime Stoppers.

If you can help police, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website.

Sure, just like a few more people killed at rain crossings will get them all sign posted and lit up.

Wishfull thinking. If your from Canberra surely you know it takes alot more than a few incidents to get the government to do something, let alone something good.

Look how many people get convicted for murder here.

A few more glass incidents and the gov’t will make it law that only plastic cups are used in future.

When I was at Defence in 1990 (just after MH opened) the girls all said that you could pick up ADFA boys at Mooseheads. I thought they were referring to Noosa Heads.

Revoke his Learner license and prohibit him from registering a car for the next 5 years.

But then he might have to catch the bus, which is just cruel and unusual punishment.

And “suspicious persons” in Moosheads – wouldn’t that be everyone in there at 1am on a Thursday night???

If they had come from that derro junky hole Phoneix bar would it have been different? Or Krave where you just have to wonder how they survive…

Im not sure what message youve gotten, but the message I got was one drink puts you over the limit. Im sure thats what the advertising says. The real problem is that alcohol on your breath doesnt necessarily mean the same concentration is in your bloodstream, if youve had any number of foods or medications or even half a cherry ripe will put you over 0.00.

That being said, this L plater was at 0.20 not 0.02 so he mustve done the best part of a 6-pack before driving. Curious as well, is the learner classified as unaccompanied or can the P licence holder in the passenger seat be held accountable for letting a learner drive intoxicated?

.02 is a crock. NSW has had a 0 limit on L’s and P’s for a long time. It sends the wrong message that they can have a drink and still drive.

LOL AG – Correct

.02 allows for cough mixture, aftershaves and toothpaste which can all provide a .01 reading…..

WTF?! L-platers can be slightly pissed (0.02) and be behind the wheel?

I thought both the learner and the accompanying person, with a full driver’s license, must be completely dry?

I thought the legal limit for learners was 0.00, and 0.02 for P-platers?
