Members of ACT Policing’s Crime Prevention team will join in activities to support the annual Day for Daniel at Giralang Primary School tomorrow (Friday, October 30).

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation was established in 2005 by Denise and Bruce Morcombe following the tragic abduction and disappearance of their 13-year-old son Daniel from the Sunshine Coast in December, 2003. Daniel’s abduction is the subject of an ongoing QPOL investigation.

The Foundation’s aim is to provide personal safety advice to young children and implement harm prevention initiatives to help protect them.

Foundation activities are planned at schools and locations throughout Australia, with ACTP officers this year joining with the Giralang Primary School in marking the red-themed occasion.

Constable Kenny Koala will be in attendance with the officers to help communicate key safety messages to the young students, continuing an important crime prevention support role which has existed between ACT Policing, ACT schools and the Canberra community for 34 years.

12. Civic Muggings:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses after two men had their mobile phones stolen and one of them was assaulted during connected incidents in Canberra City in the early hours of this morning (October 30).

In the first incident, the victim handed his mobile telephone to a man on City Walk about 3.25am after the man asked to borrow it. The victim then gave chase as the man ran in to Glebe Park with the phone. The victim was then assaulted in the park by a group of three men, who also removed an amount of cash from his wallet. He was not injured during the robbery.

A second man then attended City Police Station shortly afterward to report that his phone had been stolen in a similar incident.

The second victim had been walking on Nangari Street, near the Convention Centre, about 3.40am when he was approached by a group of four males who asked to borrow his phone. When he handed the phone over, one of the men ran away with it whilst the other males encouraged the victim to give chase. He did not give chase, instead promptly reporting the incident to police.

Police believe both incidents were pre-planned and involved the same offenders.

Investigating officers located two people of interest in the area a short time after the incidents and these men are assisting police with their inquiries. However, officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed either of these incidents, or any similar incidents, or who may know the identity of the offenders. Information can be provided via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the website at www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

As always, police encourage those frequenting public places during the hours of darkness to be mindful of their personal security and to be extra vigilant when approached by groups or requested to lend property or small amounts of money. Any suspicious approaches can be reported to police via 131 444 at the time, or through Crime Stoppers.

13. Phones down at the Winchester Centre:

ACT Policing is experiencing a technical fault with its switchboard telephone number 6256 7777. The fault prevents callers telephoning into ACT Policing from external lines.

The public should rest assured the fault does NOT affect the emergency number triple zero (000) or the police assistance number 131 444.

ACT Policing is urgently working with Telstra to rectify the problem.

The public is asked to refrain from calling the general ACT Policing switchboard until the fault is rectified.

If police assistance is required, the public is asked to contact triple zero (000) for emergencies or 131 444 for general police assistance.

Advice will be issued once the fault has been repaired.

14. Well that was easy:

Detectives from ACT Policing’s Territory Investigations Group have arrested a 23-year-old Macquarie man in relation to a robbery at a Holt service station early this morning.

The man was arrested in Red Hill about 3.00pm after investigating police followed a successful line of inquiry.

The man will be charged with aggravated robbery and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow morning.

If you can help police contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the web site www.act.crimestoppers.com.au

“A red Nissan Pajero”?

Glad to hear that some crimes have been resolved by good old fashioned policing by doing traffic stops.
A speed camera can’t catch a stolen car/unlicensed driver

4. Kambah ram raid!

These guys didn’t just stop at the IGA, they side swiped a few cars in Kambah East later on.

As reported in number 7. With 4 kids aged 13, 15 and 16, it partly makes you wonder what the parents are doing while their children are out committing crimes between 5am and 10am in the morning. No doubt they’ll receive a slap on the wrist, and figure theres no reason not to do such things again.
