1. Hospital vandalism:

ACT Policing is investigating property damage at The Canberra Hospital in Garran today (August 6).

Around 7am police were called to the new Surgical Assessment and Processing Unit at the hospital after damage to a number of items including an ice machine and zip boil unit.

At this stage the exact cost of the damage is unknown.

Around 9.50am a 52-year-old man was arrested for an unrelated matter. Police searched him and found items relating to the property damage at the hospital.

This man is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious persons or behaviour around the new wing of the hospital early today to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information may be provided anonymously.

2. So who’s bag is this?

Detectives from ACT Policing’s Drug Investigation Team have arrested a woman following a traffic stop and the execution of a Drug of Dependence Act 1989 emergency search on her vehicle yesterday (August 6).

The vehicle was stopped at around 10.45pm on the Barton Highway in Hall. Two females were in the vehicle, one aged 23 and the other aged 30.

During the search approximately 1,000 tablets suspected to be Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, commonly known as ecstasy, and $5,000 in cash were seized. A small quantity of substance suspected to be cocaine was also located and seized.

The 23-year-old female from Casey was arrested and transported to the ACT Watch House where she was charged with Traffic in Commercial Quantity of Controlled Drugs. She will appear before the ACT Magistrates Court today (August 7). The second female was released without charge.

3. Mugged in Woden:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an aggravated robbery which occurred in a park in Phillip last night (August 6).

Around 9pm a 21-year-old man was walking through Edison Park when he was approached by five men. One of the men demanded his mobile telephone. When he did not have it on him one of the offenders punched the victim on his left cheek causing him to fall to the ground. The five men have then kicked the victim in the back and head.

The offenders took the victim’s groceries, wallet and house keys before leaving in the direction of Callam Street. The victim did not sustain serious injuries and did not require medical attention.

The offenders were all described as wearing hooded jumpers.

Police would urge anyone who may be able to provide further information to assist the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers.

4. Rioting Gungahlin Style:

ACT Policing is investigating how an underage birthday party got out of control and two police officers were injured in Gungahlin last night (August 6).

Around 10pm officers were dispatched to the scout hall on The Valley Avenue in response to a 16th birthday party which had gotten out of control. Three patrols responded and found the hall to be dangerously overcrowded with a gathering of around 200 people. Most were consuming alcohol and were underage.

Party organisers could not control the crowd and a decision was made to close the party and disperse the gathering. Additional resources were requested to assist. Upon moving the group fights broke out and a number of party-goers appeared intent on provoking violence against police. Resources from City Station, Belconnen Station, Traffic Operations and caged vehicles from South District were required to restore order.

At one point a group of about twenty to thirty youths charged at police and the caged vehicles in a threatening manner forcing police to defend themselves.

As a result of the uncontrolled gathering one officer suffered an injury to his ankle and another suffered a shoulder injury after being overcome by a group who kicked him repeatedly in the back while he was on the ground. Both officers were conveyed to Calvary hospital for assessment.

A total of 13 young people were taken into custody for breach of the peace, being intoxicated and disorderly and hindering police. A number were released prior to being conveyed to the ACT Watch House on undertakings to keep the peace and released into the care of adults. The rest were released in the morning without charge. Investigations are continuing into the identity of the offenders who assaulted, resisted and incited violence against police at the party.

Acting Superintendent Andrew Bailey said it was clear insufficient planning was made in relation to this party.

“This party was inadequately supervised allowing a large group of underage persons to consume large amounts of alcohol and no planning was made in relation to getting people home. These issues were compounded by the fact that the event was advertised online resulting in a number of uninvited guests,” he said.

For information on planning an event correctly visit the Party Smart web page at police.act.gov.au.

I actually find that most of the kids that hang around skate parks are pretty much intent on skating/biking, and nothing else. Which makes me feel better that there are still kids around who just want to do their thing and not interfere with other people.

& we wonder why there is nothing for kids to do! Every wowser wants to get out and ban healthy activities cos they don’t understand it or ‘knew someone once who was robbed by a kid on a skateboard’. Bank robbers use getaway cars … should we ban cars? Sheesh … get hip with the jive!

The report said ‘five men’, and I’d believe it. That would be the only thing that would worry me about a skate park – letting my kid go there unsupervised, when grown adults, less than savoury in character, hang around and create trouble.

An airport fire truck with capsicum spray in the water cannon would work a treat in a riot…

The police should not have to be punching bags for the growing majority of teens who lack any moral or common sense.

And while we can blame the court for it, all the courts can be is responsive. They can only respond to someone who has already done wrong. Something needs to be done to shift broader attitudes in the community.

re 3 – Not surprising since they built the skate park at Eddison. I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.

Clearly they should just arrest anyone with a skateboard. Or make being a teenager illegal.

That will make our streets safer.

Isnt that the mentality the government threw at us when they decided to arrest ‘bikie gang’ members, ie. any group of more than 2 harleys in the same area at the same time? Except that 3 harleys doesnt necessarily mean trouble, a dozen skater kids out on a bored weekend, likely does. Although you missed the even easier solution, just ban hoodies.

ah, partying like you’re 19 – or at least have an iq of 19… 😉

Re #4, I hope they follow up to find out who the parents were that supplied alcohol, and charge them.
