1. Vikings knocked over:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses in its investigation of an aggravated robbery at the Erindale Vikings Club in Gartside St, Wanniassa early this morning (Monday, July 6).

Police believe two male offenders had been in the vicinity of the club from around 1.50am. They entered the rear of the premises around 3.30am, when they bound and threatened two cleaning staff. One of the offenders was believed to be armed with an edged weapon. The cleaning staff, a man and a woman, were unharmed.

The offenders damaged several poker machines, cash vending machines and an automated teller machine (ATM). A sum of cash was stolen.

Police believe the offenders were disturbed during the course of the robbery and fled the club around 4.10am.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen suspicious persons or activity outside the club from around 12.30am onwards.

Anyone who saw persons loitering or acting suspiciously around the club or the club carpark in the early hours of this morning is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

2. Acting Super Neit displeased by your drink driving:

ACT Policing has released its 2008-09 Traffic Operations reporting year data which reveals that a record number of drink drivers have been apprehended.

During the 12-month period ending June 30 2009, 1789 people were apprehended for drink-drive offences.

This is an increase of 203 apprehensions over the previous corresponding period (2007-08), and 404 more than in 2006-07. It is the highest number of drink-drive apprehensions recorded by ACT Policing and almost doubles the number of drink-drive apprehensions from 10 years ago (951 in 1999-2000).

A snapshot of the data reveals the following:

    · Male offenders represent 83 per cent of drink-drivers caught by police;

    · Drivers under 24 years of age represent 41 per cent of drink-drive offenders;

    · Police conducted 90,647 breath tests during the reporting period, the second highest number since 2000-02. The highest previous number was 100803 in 2006-07.

    · The proportion of drivers tested to those who recorded a positive reading was 1 positive to 50 tests. This is a similar outcome to the previous reporting period (1 in 51).

    · Previously, the highest number of drink-drive apprehensions reported in the ACT was 1730, recorded in 2003-04.

Commenting on the 2008-09 results, Traffic Operations’ Acting Superintendent Darryl Neit said that despite all the efforts of police and road safety authorities, the messages to motorists about the dangers of drink driving were still not getting through.

“We have a sworn duty to keep the community safe so while this problem exists and people continue to be killed and maimed on the road as a result of drink-driving, our enforcement strategies and efforts using targeted and random breath-testing will continue unabated,” A/Supt Neit said.

“If you drink and drive, you will be caught.”

3. Saturday night for fighting:

ACT Policing has arrested six people following an incident in Phillip this morning (Sunday, July 5).

Around 12:20am police were called to the Slovenian Club on Irving Street in relation to a disturbance. On arrival police were confronted with a group of men in the carpark adjacent to the Club. Several fights broke out in the group and additional police resources were called to deal with the incident including General Duties patrols from City, Tuggeranong and Woden Stations and officers from Special Response and Security’s (SRS) K9 team.

As a result of the disturbance six men aged between 18 and 27 were taken into custody for being intoxicated and disorderly in a public place and were conveyed to the ACT Regional Watch House.

Five of the men were released without charge. The sixth man aged 21 entered into an undertaking to keep the peace and was also released from the ACT Regional Watch House.

4. Swords drawn!

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses who may be able to help identify offenders involved in an aggravated robbery at the Canberra Motor Village in O’Connor Wednesday, July 8, 2009.

Around 9.22pm yesterday, three male offenders entered the front reception office of the premises on Kunzea Street in O’Connor. There were two staff members, a male and a female, working in the office at the time of the offence.

All three males were dressed in black clothing with beanies and hoods, and with bandannas and scarves across their faces.

One of the offenders was armed with a machete-type weapon and another with a short ceremonial-type sword.

A sum of money was stolen from the safe and the cash register before the offenders left on foot in the direction of Kunzea Street.

Police believe a vehicle may have been located nearby and was used by the offenders. Police would urge anyone who witnessed suspicious males in the area on foot or getting into vehicle, or with any other information which could assist the investigation to call Crime Stoppers.

I wonder if the good SuperNeit identified anybody from the recent post about those who thought drink driving was sport……hope so.

Another point, the ninja robbers need more practice, they used a car to get away, didn’t just vanish????

Traffic Operations’ Acting Superintendent Darryl Neit said that despite all the efforts of police and road safety authorities, the messages to motorists about the dangers of drink driving were still not getting through.

It’s enough to drive a man to drink!

You don’t sound too sure, FC, you raving lush.

Well the third could have been early this year or late last year
What’s a raving lush?

You don’t sound too sure, FC, you raving lush.

I’ve been breathalised at least twice this year (maybe even 3 times).
All generally in the wee hours of the morning. If I did drink, which I don’t, I certainly would expect to get caught if I were to drive.

I’d be interested in knowing how many people were breathalysed in each period in order to find that many DUI. Absolute numbers don’t mean an awful lot.

So there, you’ve been told. And don’t even THINK about blaming the road. The road didn’t do it.
