I think if we had a mental asylum the homelessness problem would be improved somewhat.

It is a huge misconception that ‘all’ homeless people are mentally ill. A major study in Melbourne found that out of 4000 homeless people, 15 percent had mental health issues prior to becoming homeless and about 16 percent developed them after becoming homeless. An archaic mental asylum/prison is the last thing we need. Mental health wards in the hospitals are just fine.

Open education is the answer I believe. There has been a few universites that have started a course here in Australia that teaches all about the humanities, for disadvantaged people – Catalyst-Clemente. It has had amazing success. The idea behind it was that humanities aren’t just for the elite – “http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2011/s3323149.htm”.

Help people to help themselves. Brilliant.

I’ve a good mind to go just to ask her WTF are we spending $432m on a new government building for, and precisely how much is being spent on helping the homeless situation.
