Following on from the news that the NCA is to be reviewed by Allan Hawke, Chief Minister Stanhope has welcomed this development as an opportunity:
Among the issues Mr Stanhope hopes will be addressed is the demarcation between local and national planning responsibilities, support for events of national significance, and a commitment to better manage the “look and feel” of the Parliamentary Triangle.
“Canberra has a unique place in Australia – as the National Capital – and the Commonwealth has a responsibility to support our city in this capacity,” Mr Stanhope said. “This includes taking planning responsibility for the Parliamentary Triangle, supporting, in full, events of national significance such as the Australia Day festivities and promoting Canberra’s role as the National Capital.
“This review presents a genuine opportunity for the Commonwealth to re-examine how the NCA serves the needs of our city as the National Capital in the lead up to Canberra’s Centenary.”
It would be nice if the outcome of the review served Canberra and the nation above all else.
But it would be a very rare thing indeed if a Government were to give up control while increasing funding.
