Pool games at Bruce in 2011?

We this year’s Rugby World Cup is over for us and the Kiwis so we may as well look to the next one, which is exactly what ACT Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan and the Canberra Times are doing by speculating that the New Zealand Rugby Union will not be able to host the 2011 World Cup if they fail in their bid to drop the number of competing team to 16. If this happens New Zealand Rugby will be unlikely to have the infrastructure to go it alone and therefore will likely need ARU support to pull it off, which in due course would open up the opportunity for Canberra to host a game or two.

In all likelihood we’d get Georgia vs Japan or something but some international rugby is better than nothing.

Planet Rugby is now carrying the story here.

A pool game or two would be fun and it doesn’t matter who plays. Those who packed the stadium during the 2003 RWC will know all too well the fun of tossing the coin as you arrive, trying to decide whether you feel more Tongan or Canadian or Italian or Welsh that evening. And, in a town with so many rugby happy Pacific people, it was lovely to see the number of unlikely looking (blonde, Asian, Middle Eastern) pseudo-Tongans or anyone trying to sing along with the real Welsh and the real Italians. Genuine sport for its own sake.

I think it was the pool game in Launceston between two no-hoper teams where the mayor suggested that the public go and support a team based on the odds and evens system. All extremely good fun.

This would be great news for Canberra, if it comes true.

Auckland City Council is now trying to back out of a promise that it made to commit funds to upgrade Eden Park, so at the rate NZ is going they’ll lose the rights to host this RWC too!

Won’t the players get wet if they play in the pool at Bruce?
