Poor old Jack Waterford is entertainment now?

It’s a sad sad day when Canberra’s most holy of sacred cows, the Canberra Times’ “Editor at Large” Jack Waterford is banished from news or even opinion and can be found lurking in entertainment.

We’re not entirely sure what the confused Canberra Times reader looking for Bieber hit (rather than going straight to TMZ) is going to make of Jack’s musings either.

A shame, because Waterford can write well and is very knowledgeable. But too often he gives in to the temptation to talk about himself rather than the issue.

Waterford stopped being a journalist many years ago.

No, he still has a shrewd, analytical mind, not to mention a talent for disinterested appraisal:

“I could even now see Brendan Nelson himself constructing the War Memorial exhibit showing her [Sophie Mirabella] throwing refugee women and babies to the sharks and men to work in the mines from concentration camps at Nauru, to the roar of the crowds from Cronulla.”

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/comment/jobs-for-the-girls-no-sinking-feelings-about-sophie-mirabella-20131221-2zrwg.html

And as we all know, the new model Canberra Times is not a ‘tabloid’, it’s a ‘compact’.

I’ll shut up now.

oh good grief I saw that piece; painful reading. Belongs on page 6 of Woroni, not as an editorial in a metro daily.

I found it under Opinion, which surely is right, meet and proper – although the categorisation might depend upon the time of day, and position (prone, supine, recumbent, modified lotus etc.etc.) in which one takes in Jack’s pearls. The absence, or not, of consciousness-altering substances in one’s bloodstream may also come into it. On the latter point, I think there is a rather nice stream of consciousness feeling to this piece – as the sage words washed over me, and carried me to who- knows-where, I had lovely Liffey thoughts, and found myself asking, who needs Ulysses, when we’ve got our very own Jack?

They’ve moved him pack to federal politics now. Is it just me or is his writing, well, bad. Clunky, passive, long winded.

Take the hint Jack.
