Ten rocking bands on a hectic schedule running from 5pm until after 1am.

It’s the world’s smallest rock festival and it arrives every year at The Pot Belly of Weedon Close, Belconnen.

Last night it took off again and RiotACT was there, trying to reconnect to our inner rockers.

There were plates of chicken wings, there were pint mugs of Coopers Pale.

And there was more rock and roll than you could point a chicken bone at.

None of that mopey acoustic stuff, none of the tribal beats, or latin influence, or jazz noodlings, that graces the bars of the inner north. This was bands that the ABC will never invite into the studio.

This was stuff you could bang your head to.

(Language warning for the video)

More on the acts we saw below:

Tim Maloney:

We arrived in time to see the last of the solo performers.

Tim eased the audience into the night with, well, the thoughtful sort of stuff an Inner Northican is familiar with.

An excellent Pearl Jam cover characterised his tone and mood.

Pleased To Jive You:

Oddly enough Pleased To Jive You had almost no jive content at all.

All the more amusing because their music contained a zillion other sounds, changing styles mid-song to great effect.

Some in our group thought they were just a little too cool and good looking. A nice problem to have.

Hard rocking, reminiscent at times of a cross between The Strokes and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Basically they gave us a lesson in old school rock and roll.

The Heroines:

Two girls up front, three blokes rocking away behind the Heroines are ones to watch on the Canberra music scene.

The darker haired vocalist had an astonishing talent for disappearing in pools of darkness at the front of the stage which didn’t help the photographers in the crowd (or the audience at the back of the bar). But she more than made up for it with doom-laden wailing vocals.

They’re a very tight outfit with some impressive musicianship coming from the boys at the back, if you like your girl-rock all dark and brooding. Our group was particularly impressed by the lead guitar, but thought he needed feeding more.

Paulie The Water Tiger:

No vocals at all, just instrumental metal.

I can’t recall seeing any band enjoying their music as much as this three piece.

Bass, guitar, and drums all played the part of rock gods, especially when the blokes got excited and stripped off their shirts.

Showmanship can be a rare beast on the Canberra music scene but these guys delivered it in spades while showing every sign of having an amazing time.

Ffatt Controller:

It was certainly nice to see Little Smoke’s bass drum getting out and about.

A band so bassy and boomy they made the creases in my trousers resonate. A strange experience.

Their lead singer just oozes charisma, complete with silk waistcoat, and had a really good manner with the crowd.

They stayed in the hard rock theme, but had a story telling quality in the vein of someone like Johnny Cash.

Johnny Roadkill:

Well with a name like that we’re hardly going to expect Belle and Sebastian covers are we?

They’ve got an amazing ability to sound a lot like ACDC, while still singing their own songs. In fact ACDC would be better advised to do some Johnny Roadkill numbers in favour of the dire recent album.

Roadkill’s also got a scary looking lead singer able to strut even on the Pot Belly’s small stage. A little bit of showmanship can go a long way and they’re not afraid to play the moves.

Apologies to the acts we missed. At the start: Dan Ihasz and John Lollback. At the finish: ZZG and Grassy YoYo. After six hours of pints some of our group were getting a little tired and emotional and it was time to depart.

‘Pleased to Jive You’ were the most impressive to me. I’d never seen these young guys before, but they were doing things inspiring, creative and slap-in-the-face original. I’m glad the reviewer had similar thoughts to me, but I would’ve gone a few steps further and said that they were the best of the night and the ones to watch in Canberra.

I found a video of some of their performance on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlyJQvlU0Jw), and while it doesn’t really do them justice, it’s a nice taste.

Definitely check them out if you get the oppurtunity.

Cool. I was in a band that played there in the early 90’s. Pop the Pop is a great idea.

Test.

Odd indeed, as I am certain I did not say test
In fact this line and the one above it are all I have added to your post el…

If you are going to a bar to perve on bar staff, your life is a bit lacking I’d say.

as a new person here i’m somewhat disappointed by the above flaming threads. I’m interested in the feedback re: pop the pot and also peoples opinions re pop the above review not nything else.. Am also mighty disappointed by the posting os sexynotsmart.. I’m sure the friendly staff at the pot belly will be glad to not have the likes of you as a regular.

For me the band I enjoyed most was Ffat Controller..though I would like to heara dn encourage others opinions especially as I wasn’t there for the whole night…

Wow Bloodnut, that came out of nowhere.

Nam is entitled to his opinion regardless of what that opinion may be. Even if he has the occasional light hearted stir at the bearded folkies there’s no need to blindside the bloke like that.

I actually know Nam pretty well and his support of local music goes way, way beyond your claimed ‘detraction of local artists’.

Although he’s not tooting his horn about it, he actually does a lot for local artists… but he doesn’t blow smoke up his own ass like many in our tiny little music scene who do far less and talk more s**t… he just gets on and does it. I will also say in his defence that you really don’t know the bloke and have no idea what you’re talking about.

You really should take your medicine and learn to be nice matey.

We’re all big boys and girls here. Last time I checked we were allowed different opinions.

Sorry for ruining your thread JB.

ND – next time you seen me at a gig maybe we can hug this out over a beer.

Thanks heaps for the review Johnboy, really nice to hear some postive feedback, particularly as the organisers and bands put the night on for free. Might just add a special thanks to “Pea” and “Ëlise” for all the hard work,.
Also big love to those who came out in support,

OK kids… how about you both continue this somewhere else?

What a strange comment. I don’t think I’v ever ‘stirred shit’ concerning the Pot Belly, or ‘Pop the Pot’, whatever that is. Did you forget to take your tablets, bloodnut?

That you wouldn’t knock your Rock at The Pot was my point exactly. Musical reviews such as this excellent piece on The Pot are normally peppered with your miserable and direspectful rantings about a section of hardworking local artists.

I was merely highlighting that the absence of your normal whinging is indicative of your blinkered musical biases. Your non-inclusive, narrow minded approach to local music that directs negativity towards only a select few genres tends to grate on my sensibilties. I wanted the world to know of my general disdain for you given your role as an outspoken detractor of local talent.

I moderate my earlier statements by noting that your review today of the HCGs was commendable. It is a single drop of recompense in the sea of anticultural sentiment that you seem to drown in.

Astounding, really. I don’t think I’ve ranted about any ‘local talent’ on Riot Act save for noting in passing that there seems to be a heavy bias towards ‘bearded folkies’, whose music – you’re right – I don’t have a lot of time for. However I would note that one of my top five bands of all time is English fol/punk outfit The Levellers; though I don’t suppose you’ve heard of them as they’re from Brighton rather than Braddon.

With regards to having a non-inclusive, narrow-minded approach to local music, well, hang me. Do I have to like everything just because it comes from Canberra? I sincerely hope not. A man can get bored listening to self-produced, arts grant funded second division nonsense after a while. Whoops, look, you’ve started me off again.

Agreed El.

You obviously did not have enough to drink ether, sexynotsmart.

(I also apologize to some band that played who I drunkenly gave ‘constructive criticism’ to while they were onstage. “Ish gotta have a solo maaaaan.” probably will never help anyone ever. They were a good band, nonetheless.)

Yep.

…and ugly-beyond-flesh-to-the-depths-of-the-soul barstaff, I ain’t going back.

Charming.

I dare say you won’t be missed by the Pot or it’s regulars.

What – spoke too soon nambucco desturbingly silent? No shit stirring? no unconstructive criticism? Dick.

The Pot holds many special memories for me – esp during 2005. May there be many Pops to come.

After so many rave mentions on this site about Pot Belly, I relished my opportunity late last week to FINALLY down a beer there. A late Friday afternoon meeting with government clients went exceptionally well (they love me, they really love me!). The boss and I just happened to be in the neighbourhood.

What a freakin’ disappointment. We must have caught them on an off-day. With the dirty chair, chipped glass and ugly-beyond-flesh-to-the-depths-of-the-soul barstaff, I ain’t going back.

But the beer was cold, and skillfully poured. And that’s the most important thing.

The pot’s good for the bands and by the standards of Belconnen, which is short of good boozers.

Ellis!

When’s that new Premium functionality being deployed??

& Little Smoke’s drummer to go along with it. Little Smoke went downhill when their orginal, most talented & best looking bass player left the band. Who was that guy again? Oh, that’s right…me. 😉

Good to See Pop The Pot going strong still.
