Chief Minister Stanhope has congratulated the new National Portrait Gallery for scooping the pool at the ACT Architecture Awards.

Canberra’s newest national attraction, the National Portrait Gallery, has taken out the Canberra Medallion at the ACT Architecture Awards. Also recognised at the awards was the New Acton East Penthouse.

“The Canberra Medallion is only awarded if there is a project the jury considers worthy and is the highest honour that can be given at the ACT Architecture Awards. I congratulate architects Johnson Pilton Walker on receiving this accolade,” Mr Stanhope said.

“I also congratulate Fender Katsalidis in collaboration with local property developer Nectar Efkarpidis along with Pamille Berg Consulting and artists Dan Maginnity and Robin Blau for the Art in Architecture Award for 2009 for the New Acton East Penthouse.

Been once, won’t be going back. Acoustics are appalling! I do not want to hear wittering idiots in surround sound when I am trying to get some cultcha.

Pretty does not beat fit for purpose.

Well I quite like it. 🙂

Architecture awards. I seem to remember that the pastel yellow block of flats in Woden won an architecture award.

pretty ? maybe in a few sections, apart from that a bit boring.

. . . they can’t get the aircon to behave.

When we visited a few weeks ago the foyer was overheated when we arrived and too cold when we were leaving. How much electricity are they wasting making the place uncomfortable?

There’s cracking already and they can’t get the aircon to behave. It is pretty though.

Interesting side-note, a mate of mine involved in the construction is still waiting to be paid for work done on the Portrait Gallery. They might be good at developing and winning awards, but not real good at paying the labourers who did the hard work to get it that way.
