[ED – we received this correction from Mark Smith today. Sorry for all those people who have been lead astray!]

Dear Riotact

Could I please get you to ammend the item I sent in re:Pot Belly Bar Last Drinks Fri June 29th 2007,
apparantly June 29th is a farewell to a staff member, the date for “Last Drinks” will be held
on a date to be advised by Joan.

Sorry for the mis-information – me bad!

[ED – And this was Mark’s first email with the offending info now crossed out. First posted: 09:25, 25 June 2007]

Joan has finally sold the Pot Belly Bar – the new owner’s intentions for the venue are unknown.

The new management will take over on July 1st 2007.

Joan & staff are having a “Last Drinks” night for regulars and local musicians from 7pm this Friday June 29th.

The end of an era for local music.

I too (mis)spent a lot of time at Captain Kiddies! And also Beggars and Leather Bottle and The (Hungry) Horse! Almost forgot, the Parachute Club (Labour Club) as well.

Never really got into the Pot Belly but wish the new owner best of luck with it.

I’ll give the new owner the benefit of the doubt. But Karaoke isn’t a good sign. If the pain of having awful singers sign awful songs all night long isn’t enough, then it’s the fact that the damned machines draw people from Page and Kippax taverns like flies.
But then again, the Ground Floor had karaoke – and they still managed some decent live music nights. Just do the karaoke on wednesday or something if you really must, I say.

I’ve heard mixed reports on the new owner, but really once the man owns it he can do whatever he wants.. it would be a real shame for Canberra to lose such a great live venue though 🙁

I’m going on friday, it’s going to be a huge night people, don’t miss it.

sad, and yet lets hope the new owners clean the pipes so the beer doesn’t taste like metal and isn’t flat every time.

From what I have heard Joan was very selective as to who she sold it to. So hopefully that bodes well for pubs future.

that’s encouraging, A.Diane. Have to say, it would be weird to buy a venue like that and kill off a thriving business offering live music.
When we used to go there, there were a lot of bush/Irish type bands, and a lot of solo or duo acoustic people also. It was always pleasant and friendly, unlike Captain Kiddies and the Blind Beggars.

Thumper…at least the Green Room will be coming to UC. That will be a plus

I actually met the new owner last week at the laborious club. He indicated that he had no intention of dumping live music.

Heard that the new owner is thinking karaoke. :-O
Just what Belco needs.

Jeez. We used to have very pleasant nights out there when I was at school… in the early 80s! A real Canberra institution, the Pot Belly.

That is really sad news. I played some of the funnest gigs i’ve ever played over the past 10 years there.

I hope all is well with Joan and staff. I guess it’s hard enough work running one venue – let alone 2.
