Those lofty collections of petunias that make our city pretty (and cause stoned teenagers waiting at the interchange to ponder how tall the guy who waters them must be) are returning!

The weather has just about finally admitted it’s Spring, so lets start gearing up for summer!

On Saturday November 16, the annual summer flower display will be installed. Perfectly suited to grow in the hot summer weather in Canberra, these flower baskets will again be filled with bouquets of multi-coloured petunias.

There will be a grand total of 1800 baskets in 464 locations around central Canberra from Hobart Place, along Northbourne Avenue through City Walk, Petrie Plaza and Ainslie Avenue.

CEO of Canberra CBD Limited Jane Easthope says she is pleased to have the flowers displayed around the city once more noting that we are the only City in Australia to invest in such a big display.

“The objective of Canberra CBD Limited is to enhance the vitality and distinctiveness of the City centre and our recent survey tells us that more than 90% of the community love the flowers,” Easthope said.

“The floral baskets being placed throughout the city centre this Saturday are paid for by our shareholders; the commercial property owners in City, Braddon and Turner because the beauty of the flowers are appreciated by traders and the public.”

After installation the flower displays will remain in place until after the Canberra Festival in March 2014.

Make sure you stop and take a moment to look up and appreciate these beautiful displays of colourful petunias and make the most of the summer in this unique city.

It’s not just the sight – it was only a few weeks ago as I was striding through Civic on my lunchtime errands that I noticed the wonderful scent of sun warmed Petunias, they looked quite healthy and flourishing to me, I wonder why they were taken down – repotting and pruning?
