Apparently there’s a power blackout in Tuggeranong, anybody know more?

[ED – ABC says its coming back on but was a doozy.]

Centrelink apparently did not handle it well, due to the “up-down-up-down again-up again-down again” nature of the outage and subsequent surging.

The lasting effect was along the lines of “Total IT systems loss” for a few hours while equipment was tested in stages, staff being sent home for the day due to non-functional servers for the day, and a ‘temporary’ solution is currently in place from ACTEW.

This piece in IT Wire has something (but not much, really)
http://www.itwire.com/it-industry-news/strategy/39766-electricity-outage-takes-centrelink-services-down

There are people in this Whirlpool thread who seem to have some idea (along with some of the usual “I’m responsible for my own late payments but blame Centrelink…” whiners):

When Centrelink has issues it potentially results in a lot of angry booners who don’t receive their welfare on time, so normally this would be bigger news…

It was only a short break in supply?!?

Then how come all of Centrelink, nation wide, was shut down due to a major power issue in Canberra?

I wouldn’t normally complain, but my colleagues got the day off for free, whilst I already had leave booked in!

The power was out in Kambah, the person who told me there was an accident said it occurred while the power was out. I don’t know.

Up in Kambah East we still had power. But then it depends where everyone’s gets their power lines go & the power cuts could of been further south then when Kambah East lines are.

But the weird thing was that I had heard reports of an accident at the intersection of Melrose & Hindmarsh Drives. Now the strange thing was that the street lights were out on Melrose Drive between Corinna Street & Hindmarsh Drive. So both accidents COULD of been linked with power cuts in certain areas.

I’m told there was an accident at Boddington/Marconi-Drakeford in Kambah when the traffic lights went out.

the accident was being reported an hour earlier, I would doubt they would cut power to all of the Tuggeranong valley because of it. The 20 minutes was long enough to make me even more late for work..

I’m told there was an accident at Boddington/Marconi-Drakeford in Kambah when the traffic lights went out.

It got all of Greenway including the apartments near the pool, the whole hyperdome and public service offices at the back. Only lasted for about 20-30 minutes from about 9:15am.
