The ABC has the news that the drought is forcing up ActewAGL’s electricity prices, so they in turn are passing them on to us.

The ACT’s price regulator, Paul Baxter, has recommended a 14.25 percent rise in domestic electricity prices.

“In terms of the average consumer, they’re looking at something in the order of $160 a year extra,” he said

The proposed increases would begin at the start of July.

Maybe we need banks of batteries under our houses, with exercise bicycle style generators attached to them. I would have the added side effect of toning up the appearance of many of our overweight friends. Improve their general health, too, taking some of the load off our medical system.

good way to encourage exercise as well..
Or at least the wearing of polyester clothing!

we should all be fitted with generators that pick up static from the movement of our bodies. Then these generators get plugged into houses.. depending on how much movement you make stipulates how much energy your house gets per night… good way to encourage exercise as well..
Apart from all the obvious issues with this I think it is the perfect solution!!

perpetual motion

Discover this and you will be a very rich man.
I have seen a few scientific/physics folk in my time have a crack – only to be broke/divorced and discredited.

thats it – im converting to perpetual motion powered cold fusion generators.

will Energy Australia provide cheaper prices or what?

Time to switch to Energy Australia.

Actually ActewAGL (not ACTEW – ACTEW owns the water assets and half of ActewAGL) wanted a 25% rise. 40% is the approximate full pricing effect of the wholesale rises and is about what commercial and government customers are likely to have to wear.

it’s just forces of a market economy, innit? a ‘drought’ of supply – or threat of one – will increase prices in an attempt to reduce demand, so allow an adequate supply.

that said, seems the people what buy ‘green power’ ought to be exempt from this rise as they can’t possibly [by doctrine] be the ones responsible for the threat to supply, can they?

What ? Couldn’t get us to pay a ‘Green’ rate now forcing us to pay a Drought price. For the life of me I cant see how putting up the price is going to solve the problem. Will the higher price produce more rain? And when it dose rain , Will the price go down? Are they putting the extra money into other viable power sources? (back into my hole)

They were ‘absorbing’ their increased costs until they hit 40%?

Better than 40% as ACTEW wanted.

Hang-on, how much “green” energy was ACTREW buying from SnowyHydro anyway? 10%

Geez, we wouldn’t want a significant increase in one hit would we…
