The Australian reports that after all the sturm und drang surrounding the data centre development in Hume (with associated power generation capacity) the whole thing has finally secured a financier to actually build it.

Challenger Financial Services (owned by the Packers IIRC) is putting up the money for $1 billion development.

From the article:

“release around 1.5 million tonnes of exhaust per turbine”

OMG!! We’ll all be crushed!!!

Each generator set (air compressor, gas turbine, bypass and exhaust-stack assemblies) was about 58m long; the Boeing 747’s wingspan measured 64m, Mr Reid said. The Titan 130 exhaust stacks were 35m high while the Boeing 747 stood at just 19.4m at its highest point, the top of its tail, he said.

According to the spec sheet these units are only 14m long including the generator. If you are going to count the exhaust stack height in the length calculation, then you should probably include the cruising altitude in the 747 comparison.

I saw Bill Ried’s awkward bit of spin in the Oz as well. I like how he needs to try an use emotive comparisons like 747 jets. I guess I he stuck to reality it wouldn’t get a look in no matter how quiet a news day they were having at Australian IT.

Given that the DA has been approved, we’ve probably got just enough time for a tad more wailing and grashing of teeth from the NIMBYs before the bulldozers get to work.

The data centre saga has gone national. Clown killer, Chewy; there really is no need for name calling and abuse when debating an issue, even when you feel strongly about the topic.

The new site is the other side of the recycling facility. Diferent zoning means that they won’t have to meet as stringent emissions standards for the power plant (so the residents that were over a km away from the old site will end up sucking in worse pollutants than they would have done had they not whinged like pigs – but that’s what you get with Stanhope if you’re a tool). Add to that the fact that the new south side crematorium is going in on the old site and they’ll be enjoying the smell of barbecue too). It’s a win-lose situation. ACTEW and Stanhope win and the NIMBYs lose – a recipe for winning votes in anyones book.

Isn’t Digga right in the sense of TRE managing a turn-around on the problems or otherwise of the new site? TRE were adamant that they couldn’t move, and then they did. Maybe it’s a different site now?

You might think the data centre is great, but Digga is right. TRE should try to keep their story straight.

Ha, you and your reality distortion fields.

Wish I had a pair of those rose coloured glasses. Suck up the emissions.

Digga,
can you give it up?
Your silly NIMBY scare campaign won.
Hope you enjoy the gas fired crematorium you’re going to get in its place.

Digga,

you shouldn’t believe everything you read on the interwebby.

I think you’ll find that since that article Technical Real estate have had their DA approved for that site and it’s not in a 1 in 100 year flood area, not under a flight path, and would appear to be of sufficent size.

Which part is fact then?

Poor old Challenger Financial. Sold a dead duck. Guess the ACT Government will just end up bailing them out at our expense.

Taken from:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/07/18/2307734.htm

“Technical Real Estate director Andrew Campbell says the Hume site was not suitable to develop for a number of reasons.

He says the land was too small, under a flight path and too close to the Monaro Highway.

“The other thing about that site is that it’s low-lying and subject to a one in 100 flood zone,” he said.

“It’s a risk that data centre occupiers won’t allow when you’re developing a site for data centre use.”

Sigh. It wasn’t in Hume JB, it was planned for Tuggeranong. I’m thinking the Jerra residents aint going to be too happy about this development.
