Steve Pratt has put out a media release pointing out that levels of Random Breathe Testing in the ACT have fallen to a five year low. (So the previous low was during Liberal Government?)

He goes on to point out that the “targeted approach”, while it might yield more bang for the buck in terms of convictions, also creates a false sense of confidence amongst drivers and fails as a deterrent. He goes on the slyly draw it back to the “more police” stoush.

So the question is, would visible RBT make you less likely to drink and drive?

I have seen one RBT all year – on Commonwealth Avenue Bridge at 8:30 on the Wednesday after ANZAC day.

Now how many people would they catch there? It was as if they were not trying…

I seem to remember the cops scaled back on RBTs because they were only catching the odd person. They did target them, putting them up near drinking events.

Maybe Pratt should go on the undercover mission himself, based on his experience…

Perhaps waiting for the machinery to be certified and callibrated(sp?) before putting more of them on the job would be a good first step.
