Pre poll voting opens. Beware the vultures

Elections ACT is warning that the pre-polls have opened for the 2012 election.

The voting places can be found at:

    — Belconnen Community Centre, Swanson Court (cnr Chandler St), Belconnen
    — Pilgrim House, 69 Northbourne Ave, Canberra City
    — Downer Business Park, 2 Bradfield St, Downer
    — Gungahlin Library, Cnr Hibberson & Gozzard Street, Gungahlin
    — Salvation Army Hall, Cnr Anketell St & Reed St North, Tuggeranong
    — Woden Smith Family, Cnr of Launceston St & Easty St, Woden

This election campaign is nowhere near over so I would strongly advise against casting a pre-poll vote unless you have a compelling reason to do so.

But if you’re in the vicinity of those polling places watch out for the party workers trying to get in at the last minute.

Labor have done their dash, and that goes double for the Greens. These 2 parties walked all over us with their coercive ideas, treat us with contempt, and then expect to be re-elected! And how many times in a row have they held government in the past 10 years?

I made up me mind a year ago, so you can forget trying to talk me into not treating the campaign as over because as far as I am concerned, it’s a foregone conclusion that I will not be supporting Labor, or the Greens, at this year’s election. I think a minimum of 4 years in the political wilderness is the least that they deserve for the way they have treated their electors with their choices about their day-to-day lives, being made for them.

I too voted today and not a party hack to be see at Gungahlin Library. But according to the election flyer in our letterbox it’s because of the 100m exclusion zone. And with the Gungahlin pre-poll room in the library being just inside the door, and on street parking only 20m away, it’s easy to get in and out. Now if it were only that easy to get in and out of the supermarket on Saturday mornings without having to run the political gauntlet …

I just voted now as I’ll be roughly 800kms away on polling day.

I was quite surprised to sweep in to cast my electronic vote totally unmolested by How to Voters. .

I’m fairly sure that when the Hare Clark system and Robson Rotation was introduced, the ACT Self Government Act was amended to outlaw how to vote cards being handed out at polling booths.

I was quite surprised to sweep in to cast my electronic vote totally unmolested by How to Voters. I was expecting something akin to Luke Skywalker’s final approach to blow up the Death Star. It was only after I left that I stumbled across a couple of leaflet dispensers a good 200m away.

Why vote every four years at all?

Why not just register your affiliation for all time and walk away from the process?

Is this another Cory consequence of allowing gay marriage – the slippery slope to marrying your political party? I suppose that they are all animals, anyway.

Johnboy, stop giving them ideas.

I think a large proportion of the population would like to do exactly that.

Why strongly advise against voting early? I’m interested predominately in a candidate’s ideologies and affiliations rather than their increasingly desperate late-campaign “promises”.

As such, I’ll be voting early. The more people who do so, the less reliance in future by candidates on last minute promises and tit for tat squabbling, and better service throughout the parliamentary term.

Although that would reduce the spike in traffic (and ad revenue) for sites such as this so I can see where johnboy is coming from.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s the great drama made out in the article. A great many people already know who they will be voting for and all the campaigns in the world won’t change their mind. Why should they wait another 3 weeks?

Let’s just introduce an electoral college.
