Previous recruits disappointing to Chief Police Officer

The Canberra Times brings the intriguing news that ACT Policing is abandoning the AFP’s national recruitment process, due to dissatisfaction with the results to date:

ACT Policing will for the first time source its own recruits in a bid to overcome a high staff turnover and attract Canberra-raised cops.

Chief Police Officer Roman Quaedvlieg said yesterday he had been disappointed with some previous recruits, who were part of a larger Australian Federal Police intake and were then allocated national or ACT Policing roles.

He said as many as one in three new officers currently left ACT Policing within four years.

There’s going to be a large media campaign to convince Canberrans to sign up.

5% of ACT Police had left in the previous 12 months

A 5% attrition rate would be an unattainable fantasy in the APS.

Farq… Just saying what? With your broad knowledge of this and other policing organisations surely you could share your views and be taken seriously.

Just saying that high turn over of staff is an indication of poor management(in any business). I know you can’t accept this, so you just resort to being truculent.

Maybe the high turn over is due to the all lovely colleagues you get to work with in the AFP, people like DJ, Birch, Grimm etc.

Wow, making an opinion on speculation and sensationalised stories from a disgruntled ex-employee. Maybe this person is an EX employee for a reason. You want to get involved in a discussion of this type, fine but maybe a little actual knowledge would go a long way.

A mate of one of my sister-in-law’s friend’s cousin’s hairdresser’s friends said that heaps of the police had resigned, so obviously the police have been replaced by Reptoids.

BTW, just to clarify – I’m not arguing that staff turnover isn’t high (Quaedvielg himself said so). My issue was with this claim by exfeds:

“Since Audrey Fagan hanged herself in another jurisdiction, the attrition rate has gone through the roof.”

To support this, he would have to know turnover rates prior to 2006 and turnover rates since.

Source as per your request – source of information would be the AFP, HOWEVER….See http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/aat/2010/219.html

That has absolutely nothing to do with my post, or this thread.

Thank you. So in short, you have no source. If 33 members (AFP or ACT?) – or about 5% of ACT Police had left in the previous 12 months, that doesn’t support your claim that the attrition rate has “gone through the roof”. By the way, which area did your ‘source’ work in?

-What members in a high profile position are going to have current Policing experience in the field / face to face with the General Public (YOU)?

That’s not what you said, champ. You said members without real policing experience promoted themselves.

– Since, no doubt positions were readily vacated (as quoted by the CPO) who do you think filled those shoes…anyone available at the time….inexperienced members?

So you’re assuming that when positions are vacated, there is no one else qualified to take them, therefore they are filled by inexperienced members? So you’re assuming, and really don’t know.

If one in three left over a four year period, who the hell are we speaking to at the cold face of the ACT POLICE?

It’s COAL face, you dolt.

It was a sad day for ACT Policing!!! Members without real Policing experience began promoting themselves and their mates to higher duties to fill the gaps, hence, forcing members with limited experience into senior roles that lacked the management and staffing experience to foster good working relationships…Sounds like a Grimma.

No doubt this occurred about 4 years ago…CHECK THOSE STATS!!!!!

How about if you’re going to come out with these claims, you provide a source. Probably because you can’t.

– How do you know the attrition rate has gone through the roof?
– Members without policing experience promoted themselves?
– Members with limited experience were forced into senior roles?
– What’s a Grimma?

Tooks, thank you for taking the time to address the more pertinent points of my post.
In response, I have the following to share:
-having spoken with a sworn member, of the AFP, approximately a year ago about the very issue of attrition, I was told that he personally knew 33 members that had resigned within that 12 month period.
-What members in a high profile position are going to have current Policing experience in the field / face to face with the General Public (YOU)?
– Since, no doubt positions were readily vacated (as quoted by the CPO) who do you think filled those shoes…anyone available at the time….inexperienced members?
– A “Grimma” seems to be a caution available to senior members of Police as required (GET OUT OF GAOL CARD) 🙂

Source as per your request – source of information would be the AFP, HOWEVER….See http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/aat/2010/219.html DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ASKING FOR IT – YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!

Hmmm, a little disgruntled with an axe to grind me thinks ……

Why is it to avoid the subject of hearing the truth (BTW Exfeds is spot on lol) serving members always say ‘axe to grind, axe to grind’ seriously guys it’s getting old. Be safe in your distorted view that you are safe until that is you may see wrongdoing and decide to act and then there will be many more axes to grind 🙂

But I think not as there are to many types that lack the backbone to stand up for what is right. Scary part is these ones are supposed to be pillars in the community…….

Nah I think he lost the axe, his mind and his job… But look on the bright side out of all that he got to think of a nickname…

A good start might be to ask those who have left what their real reasons were. The exit “interview” I had from the AFP was a farce.

You had one? 🙂 And also what they may be able to do to encourage you to stay!

Are you a former police officer?

They…. know its pointless asking a police officer questions and expecting a straight answer.

Why would you give an exit interview? It can’t help you now your leaving, yet if you burn people (even constructively) it can come back and bite you later – its a small town.

Is there an organisation in the country that gets recruitment 100% correct every time? This seems like an opportunity to throw stones not to actually contribute constructively.

Farq… Just saying what? With your broad knowledge of this and other policing organisations surely you could share your views and be taken seriously.

Fabforty… nothing more ‘ex’ than an ‘ex’ as you should know.

This sounds like a great opportunity for anyone who has had any advice on how Police could do their job better, to get amoungst it and show ’em how it’s done.

And speed up the recruitment process.

You see high turn over in areas that have bad/hostile management.

Just saying.

A good change might be to have a CPO and DCPOs that actually want to stay in the ACT for more than 12 months themselves.

Another might come from asking those who have stayed in the ACT why they did so and those who have left why they have made that decision as well.

Ending the current obsession with management fads, arbitrary organisational change and staff rotations might encourage those heading for Federal Operations to stay in ACTP.

Merely recruiting locals won’t stop this outflow (just sayin…)

A good start might be to ask those who have left what their real reasons were. The exit “interview” I had from the AFP was a farce.

I remember a few years ago in the CT the AFP had a vacancy for a Policy Officer…

So the Chief Police Officer is unhappy with previous recruits. Perhaps he should ask the recruits and the general public what they think of the senior police officers and their policies.
