I wonder if anyone can tell me if there are official limits for primary school class sizes in the ACT, and if so, is this information online somewhere? Searching for obvious terms has not come up with much useful info.

Thanks!

Thought I would look at our school website…see what I have found below:

…What are the class sizes at Amaroo School?

The school tries to keep classes as small as possible. In Kindergarten to Year 3, class sizes in Government School are around 21 children. Our current class sizes are:

•Kindergarten – 21 students per class
•Year 1 – 21 students per class
Year 2 – 21 students per class
•Year 3 – 21 students per class
•Year 4/5 – 27 students per class
•Year 6/7 – 27 students per class
•Year 8 – 27students per class
•Year 9 – 27 students per class
•Year 10 – 27 students per class

I like that. It’s very kind of them to let parents know that sort of thing. Well done Amaroo!

Hi. Child in year 3 has 28 children in class with them. Child in year 5 also has 28. I think this is the upper limit. Did hear a while back that target was 25 but this must have moved or there must be some leeway for when there are too many kids. Our school has a ‘glut’ of children in the year 3 age range. So much so, that two new classes had to be organised several months into the new year -taking it from 4 classes to 6 classes. One might ask why they didn’t realise this from the enrolment numbers and cater for it before the school year – it took several parents to express their disappointment about class numbers for this outcome to occur. Let me just say it was very disruptive to all of the children not just those that were moved to the new classes.

Ask the teachers at your school – they will know.

I think it is 32.

I also think they can double that in an ’emergency’ (eg – teacher didn’t show up, another teacher minds two classes til they sort something out.)

I can’t find anything online tho.
