Prison gets a bad review from a connoisseur

The ABC has the amusing tale of one Terrence Warwick Butt who has complained to Magistrate Walker about the lack of amusement at the Alexander Maconochie Centre compared to the other facilities he has enjoyed:

In a talk lasting several minutes Butt told Magistrate Lorraine Walker that he believed there was nothing positive about the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC).

He explained that he had spent time in many different prisons around New South Wales, with plenty of higher education course options and hobbies to pursue.

But Butt said in Canberra the boredom had badly affected his and others’ rehabilitation.

I’m not entirely sure anyone who can make comparative analysis of prison conditions is well suited to speak of rehabilitation.

The Human Rights Commission probably do a terrific job in places where human rights are a problem; they’re a complete WOFTAM in this country and achieve little other than walls of red tape.

At a recent visit to a local primary school I noticed a bunch of “ACT Human Rights Commission – Bringing Hope to the ACT” posters coloured in by the children pasted to the wall.

So my question, “WTF does this organisation do?” was partly answered: they spend their TAM printing black and white posters for distribution to schools in order to indoctrinate schoolchildren into thinking that their lives are somehow being improved by the mere existence of this otherwise functionless bureaucratic bloat.

The day when my hopes that I have for the lives of my children and other ACT residents depends on these arseclowns is the day I’ll..the day I’ll…bugger me, I dunno what I’d do if that happened.

Terry Butt – wonder if his nickname is ‘Hairy’.

…or Smelly.

There’d be a gig with the Zarsoff Brothers waiting for him.

Apparently there was talk before the AMC opened that there was going to be industries and such in the AMC for the prisoners. But Helen Watchirs wisely kiboshed the idea because the prisoners would be earning less than minimum wage and therefore would be a breach of their human rights.

Really WTF!!!

“Apparently” meaning “I read it on the inside of a toilet door so it must be true”?

Well of course on the inside … any old sod could write on the outside, making it potentially unreliable information.

I reckon he should considering changing his name to something less offensive. Like arsehole, for example.

I liked the magistrate’s suggestion that he form a chess club. I doubt if he got any of the many references embodied in this admirably dry comment, though. He’s clearly not the brightest light in the chandelier.

Mr Butt should consider committing his next offence (for it seems inevitable that there will be one) in the vicinity of a more congenial jail.

Bali?

By all means. Bring your own drugs…

I’ll be more specific. I had a conversation with a person who worked on the prison project team back when the AMC was being constructed and they told me that snippet of information.

You can now dial down your “smug” to a less annoying level.

Okay, smug dialled down – my own sources close to the action told me me that the reason there’s no industrial work is for other reasons. Like it’s supposed to be a rehabilitation prison, not a slave labour factory. That the availability of skills in a small sentenced population is low, and a lot of them won’t mix with each other (or won’t play nice if they do mix); and remandees can’t be forced to work and also have a nasty habit of not being available for work because of court appearances, and even being released unexpectedly. Lots of other reasons I can’t be bothered to list.

They used to make Minah(?) bird traps, but I don’t know if that is still happening.

It’s a bit early for April 1st jokes!

Perhaps if Mr Butt had partaken of the higher education courses allegedly (see what I did there) available in the numerous NSW facilities he has resided in, perhaps he would have the wherewithal to stop reoffending and thus be able to manage his career options much more objectively.

He’d have learn how to read and write first!

Damn, and I’ve just booked the last two weeks in March in there for a short break and some R&R. Bloody holiday brochures always lie…

I know this scumbag, he is a member of my ex’s extended family. Poor Terry, keep up the good work ‘mate’ and I hope you get many more opportunities to complain about how shitty you have it in the various prisons in which you undoubtably deserve to spend the majority of the rest of your life.

Interestingly there was a job advertised on Seek this week that seemed to be advertising for someone to manage the training and education framework at the prison – and sounded from the ad like it wasn’t very existent at the moment as it was a newly created position. Sounded interesting, but personally would not throw my hat into the ring to work for the local gov right now.

This one? http://www.seek.com.au/Job/manager-training-assurance-and-planning/in/act-act/24017656 Staff training, not prisoner training.

What? They got sick of raping and stabbing eachother already?

Can always go for some good old fashioned prison entertainment. Day after day filled with the excitement of turning big rocks into little rocks.

You’re suggesting we have them instructed in the subtle art of conjuring?

He’s bound to be the butt of all jokes at the AMC after this performance!

Give them access to the-RiotACT. That would entertain us at least.

I agree.

We could provide them with spelling tips and so forth.

..and show them how to park cars

I’m not entirely sure anyone who can make comparative analysis of prison conditions is well suited to speak of rehabilitation.

My first thought, too … obviously his preferred institutions are doing much better at rehabilitation, judging by his repeat visits.

You just can’t reason with idiots.

Having said that, boredom in prison has got to be a bad thing. Shouldn’t they be making number-plates or somesuch? Chinese cr@p is cheap coz we can’t match their labour costs; we have all this free/cheap labour in prisons going begging, sitting around twiddling their thumbs and/or shivs.

Apparently there was talk before the AMC opened that there was going to be industries and such in the AMC for the prisoners. But Helen Watchirs wisely kiboshed the idea because the prisoners would be earning less than minimum wage and therefore would be a breach of their human rights.

That’s crazy. We should pay them minimal wage. Then we should take out room and board and they can keep any that is left.

devils_advocate11:16 am 21 Feb 13

The real concern is that we have a male inmate named Butt who complains of boredom, and we don’t have a single posting along the lines of “well, I’d have thought with a name like Butt he’d get plenty of action!” or something equally peurile/hilarious.

For shame, RA, for shame.

Even as I type this, I’m sure Rattenbury is on the phone to the staff at the AMC demanding that they make life for the prisoners more fun.
