A prisoner allegedly held another prisoner hostage at knifepoint at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) over the weekend, sparking a lockdown at the prison.

The man was armed with a shiv – a makeshift prison knife – but no one was injured during the two-and-a-half-hour incident on Saturday (27 March), a Justice and Community Services Directorate spokesperson said.

Region Media understands a prisoner held the shiv to the other prisoner’s throat and guards threatened to use tear gas before the incident de-escalated.

The hostage was a prisoner on remand at the time of the alleged incident.

The spokesperson said that “corrections officers acted quickly and professionally to resolve the incident”.

It is not clear what sparked the episode.

Region Media understands the same man allegedly cut another prisoner’s head with a shiv and threatened guards in October last year.

Privatise the operation of the prison. Judging by the number of issues and incidents reported here over the past few years, it appears the cabal between the government and the union are unable sort the place out.

Yeah, what a great idea, make it a run for profit organisation instead if a government lead one.

Privatization will not only save money but improve outcomes for prisoners and the community in its entirety. Though full privatization is unlikely, the ACT government should look at recruiting from the private sector in order to combat the poisonous culture that exists in public prisons in Australia.

Inca Serrated – Education and rehabilitation programs are already privatised at the Canberra jail and the outcomes haven’t improved, particularly for the law abiding victims of the offenders.

I was speaking to the privatisation of the prison has a whole, not the selected outsourcing of those things ACT corrective services consider beneath them. my understanding is that the education at AMC is suffering because of the restrictions imposed by ACT corrective services and the contract management of the education tender. MTC or Serco would be best placed to overhaul this system.

Inca -Your understanding is not correct and recruitment has come from the private sector since the AMC opened. Have a look at Detention Centres and tell me Serco is the answer.
