Prisoners to build Prison

In an interesting approach to project management of resourcing the new ACT prison seems set to be build by the prisoners themselves according to this article in today’s CT.

New ACT Attorney-General Simon Corbell must be missing his previous portfolio and is dabbling in building again with claims that “It helps give prisoners ownership of [the prison], pride in it.” Although crafty prisoners might try include escape routes in their design plans. Luckily, its only going to be escape from the “quiet” area and gym that are currently on the drawing board for inclusion (should the budget not run over any futher).

As you would expect, shadow minister Zed Sesejla has rubbished the plan claiming its a prison we dont need and it would still be cheaper to send prisoners into the NSW system.

The ACT Govt has also launched interstate advertising campaign offering “rewarding” pay and conditions for custodial officers to fill the 159 full-time-equivalent jobs starting at $44,980pa, with seven weeks’ leave a year, and “no experience required”.

Mrs Maelinar thinks it might encourage recidivism with the proud builders.

welcome to the ACT’s correction resorts (prison and youth detention) all the mod cons (no pun intended 😉 ) Who would want to leave these spacious rooms, excercise yards, swimming pool.. hell I’d go stay there!

leave the old saw in the brickwork while building?
I can see it now..

Well said Maelinar.

They should break rocks

Oh, they should make it out of limestone as well.

I agree with LG and S4anta.

If convicts are going to build the prison, then so be it.

Don’t try to make it sound like a snazzy thing with a liberal injection of PC jargon though, they’re just wankwords.

@$45K pa they’d want to hope those new blocks in casey go dirt cheap cause I somehow get the feeling ‘affordability’ is still going to be anissue on that income. Perhaps the prisoners could build new housing for their new and inexperienced whipping masters instead ?

I can imagine it now… “awww c’mon baasss, isa built you a reel noice bath room, can’t you cut me some slack?”

If it was good enough for the convicts when Australia was settled..!

Actually, I have no problem with this – though I do find the gov’s attempt to put a positive spin on it a little desperate.

I want them shackled while they are building it as well.

maybe they need a practioner of the indian laughing meditation as well. A bunch of prisioners laughing at themselves. fantastic.

Prisoners dont need pride, they just need a foot so far up their arse that every time they sneeze the general community has their shoes laces tied. that end of the specturm is quite simple in my book.

The Alexander Machongie Centre… where inexperience and incompetence rans supreme.

The jail will be built by inexperienced prisoners.
The prisones, guarded by inexperienced gaurds.
But at least the damn thing meets UN standards. So that when the prisoners do break out thanks to the incompetent gaurds ad holes they left in te place hen they built it, all those human rights will ensure they’re be fit and happy and ready to run!
