water consumption graph

It’s been a long time between drinks but the Measuring Our Progress website has cranked up to announce that progress has been made on water consumption.

Over the reporting period, ACT water consumption per household has decreased. Despite brief increases in 2005-06 and 2008-09, water consumption has declined from over 300 kL/property in 2000-01 to 200 kL/property in 2008-09.

Well done everybody.

Does this mean I can have a shower again with a real shower head (a pox on those puny water savers)?

I am guessing that one reason for per capita consumption dropping is the increase in medium density housing and small blocks in new estates. Having little or no garden makes a big difference to consumption.

Yeah, and the graph is misleading as per the first post.

I would propose that water prices are way too cheap. We are still using fresh drinking water to flush our toilets and wash our cars. On a world scale, that is profligate waste.

Let’s face it, ACTEW still need the same (if not more) income to function each year. So no matter how little water we all use, we will still (generally) pay the same amount of money for it. Such is life!

How come they give us such old figures? The drought only broke in 2010-11…

1 – That graph *looks* misleading. The scale does not start from 0, which exaggerates the visual difference.

2- Thats not to say we’re not using less water as a whole.

The total usage has remained pretty constant, but our population has grown without an increase in total consumption.
