The Property Council have announced their Centenary Declaration:

The Declaration calls for catalyst infrastructure projects to deliver economic, social and environmental benefits to the community, including an agreement with the Commonwealth on funding for High Speed Rail.

“We are calling for the revitalisation of our city centre under the stewardship of a new, well-resourced and professional Civic Development Authority”, Catherine Carter said.

The CDA would oversee renewal of laneways and arcades, adaptive reuse of commercial buildings and the important staging of the City to the Lake projects including the delivery of a new convention centre.

Catherine Carter, the PCA’s vuvuzela, says this of Constitution Ave:

“It is time to finalise this essential piece of infrastructure. It will be lined soon enough with wonderful, new development…” (http://citynews.com.au/2013/the-avenue-thats-going-nowhere/).

What the PCA is all about is having the government (i.e. us) pay for all the upgrades around the city so the developers can move in. But whenever the government (i.e. us) ask for some curbs on their extravagances, then they want the government (i.e. us) to get out of the way while they make super profits on their developments.

“Heads I win, tails you lose” is the PCA motto. Pack of leeches.

The ebbs and flows of population droves to and from Canberra will, as has always been the case, be driven by the potential to make a buck here from the public purse – whether directly or indirectly. Yes, we do need infrastructure, but we also need to be fiscally sustainable and affordable – and not just for people on comfortable middle and upper level incomes. Of course, when the light rail is connected to the Multifunction Polis, we will be in clover.

Where did they get permission to use the official Centenary livery?

Wow! Property Council wants “free” stuff, which will not – in fact – be free at all.

What they have not worked out is that building crap that fails every cost-benefit analysis ever known with taxpayers’ money is not borrowing for critical capital investment. It’s setting up ACT taxpayers to take the fall.

I just wish Mayor Rattenbury and Co. would stop “trusting the science” for a bit and start “trusting the economics”.

That is the issue i have with trusting economics. While I agree governments can’t go borrowing money to spend etc, this whole idea from conservative voters that spending on environmentally sound ideas is a waste, because they don’t believe the science, will just lead to bigger problems down the track, because of the few misinformed skeptics that have an issue with this.

Also this plan, is in the main a good plan for Canberra. Shouldn’t they have a plan? They haven’t said they are going to build this all at once, in fact they will have developers wanting to develop the land I’m sure.

I’m sick of people complaining about government spending money on things that are actually beneficial to Canberra. The whole government budget can’t be spent on health, education and roads. You’ll soon find people leaving the city in droves because of the neglect to everything else, the health and education systems will still have flaws and the roads will still not be perfect. The problem with pure economics is placing a value on things without monetary value. We can do cost benefit anaylsis to the death, but every person will have a different response to what value we put on the value of happiness and well being of Canberrans.

There are many things here that IMO are slanted too far towards the property councils benefit, but this city is already nice, but it still has a long way to go to improve.

When the smoke clears, and the dust settles, the Feds might offer some assistance, a la Marshall Aid to Europe after WWII – or not.
