Property Council looks at car parks in Civic

The ABC has picked up the Property Council’s complaint that Parking in Civic is a major problem (they estimate 6,000 more places are needed).

Over the weekend I saw comments from the Governmnt in the CT that Civic is only down 1,000 places from where it used to be, I’d contend that those 1,000 places were in the most convenient areas. There seems to be an assumption by planners that we’ll be willing to walk further but I suspect for many it’s just another reason to drive to a locale with better parking.

I only go to Civic if I have to access that many shops of that sort to find something. I always dread it. I always stipulate to my agencies, I won’t work in Belconnen, Tuggeranong or Civic. First two are too far, last one is just too bloody awful to park in and pay for.

The Property Council are a bunch of grubby self interested wankers that want to derive maximum benefit out of the community without actually making any contribution to it.

The ACT government is the planning authority you would think that htey would plan for the amount of parking needed by each development.

Then again this coould just be lobbying by the property council (who build the building without adequate parking) for a fat governmnet subsidy- in the form of a tax payer built carpark.

The ACT government announced funds for a parking strategy in the last budget. This could be the beginning of the businness lobbying attempts?

Re: walking from the lake – a shuttle bus on a free loop would solve that easily – such a thing works brilliantly in the Brisbane CBD.
Re: the Property Council (bless Catherine Carter’s little soul), they are always banging on about not enough car parking, but their consituents will fight tooth and nail to reduce the number of carparks they have to build in every single one of their developments. The subtext of this is the PC only want additional car parks that are paid for by the ACT government, and that means you and me subsidising the developers’ pay packets.
IMHO…

it’d be nice if the government didn’t keep closing infrastructure out in the community, forcing you to drive to their megaplexes.

It would be nice if the govt did focus on better public transport so that I didn’t have to drive my bloody car everywhere and thus not worry about car parks.

too logical seepi, plus that would cost the cash strapped gov money !

Actually, people might walk from the lakeside to work if parking was free or cheap, leaving spots close to town for shoppers.
– it is hard to carry shopping home on the bus.

I read that they are building a huge new carpark over near the lakeside. Noone is going to walk from there to the shops.
