The year has been a bumpy ride for shopkeepers at Denman Prospect, however, the suburb’s developer, Capital Airport Group, says prospects are great for residents throughout the Molonglo Valley.

This week, ABC Canberra reported of supply issues and inadequate stock on the shelves of the IGA Supermarket known as The Farm, saying that customers were concerned the store would close. The store opened in January this year.

On July 21, the IGA store was among the latest to be targeted in a ram raid but thieves left empty-handed. The thieves attempted to steal an ATM but were unsuccessful, leaving behind a sledgehammer.

The Denman Village Shops is set below 16 residential terraces, with views toward the National Arboretum Canberra. The Farm is the largest store alongside eight specialty shops, a medical centre, a childcare centre, a gym and a cafe.

A spokesperson for the Capital Airport Group said they have been aware of the inadequate stock on shelves at Denman Prospect IGA for some time.

“The current level does not meet the standards that are required for the supermarket, and we are aware that the store is not properly serving the needs of Denman Prospect residents nor the people throughout the Molonglo Valley,” said a statement issued to Region Media.

“The developers of Denman Prospect have taken steps to rectify the issue, and this will become evident in the coming weeks so that the store will again meet the needs of the Molonglo Valley.

“We are committed to a successful supermarket and shopping centre for our Denman residents, and we will keep the community updated on any progress when it is legally appropriate to do so.”

Capital Airport Group said all the other retailers have been performing strongly since their opening and that operators had confirmed they are happy with the initial trade of their businesses.

“The general practice and the chiropractor had bookings on their first day and Morning Dew cafe has lines that stretch outside each morning. Capital Chemist has commenced the fit-out of their tenancy and will open this spring, and a pizza restaurant is beginning their fit-out in coming weeks,” Capital Airport Group said.

Morning Dew’s owner Arthur Choi said, “If you provide the right service, and you are there to tend to your clients, then your business will thrive”.
