ACT Policing is investigating the theft of around 40 high-end bicycles in Fyshwick at the weekend.

Between 8pm Friday (August 3) and 9am yesterday (Monday, August 9) offenders broke into a secure trailer parked on Townsville Street, Fyshwick.

The offenders removed the 2013 model Trek brand bicycles from secure racks and loaded them into an unidentified vehicle.

Police believe the process of unloading and reloading the bikes would have taken the offenders at least an hour.

The bicycles are high performance models and are not yet available for purchase in Australia. Their estimated value is approximately $300 000.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity on Townsville Street at the weekend is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

Maybe these 40 bikes weren’t all they are being cracked up to be…? Maybe getting a cash payout will save the business from having to get rid of a bunch of mis-ordered lemons that were going to have to be sold at massive discount prices just to get rid of them?

You’re aware that Trek worldwide are close to a billion dollar business, right? Seems like they might know just a little more about the business of selling bicycles than you do.

It’s my understanding that they were doing renovations to the premises so there was nowhere for the bikes to be stored inside. The bikes were due to be moved inside this week.

Instead, the business owners get an insurance pay-out for 40 bikes they didn’t have to find customers for as well as loads of free publicity.

You’re right. It’s sounds like a genius business plan to get rid of 40 brand new bikes and then have to wait for their replacements to hit Australian docks, thus pushing back the release date of your top end new season product whilst your competitors get a headstart with their new product. Pure genius. Are you available for business mentoring?

What we do know is that the thieves knew exactly what they wanted and where to get it – you don’t randomly break into trailers and then happen to have a suitable vehicle handy to contain 40 $7,000 w4nkercycles.

My dad always told me never to argue with a fool. Fools tend not to listen to reason or logic.

Before this story I’d never heard of Trek bikes. .

Lance Armstrong won lots of big popular races like the Tour De France on Trek bikes for a good number of years. They are out there and have been for a while.

For those following along at home…

Just passing on some info – Here’s a link to the serial numbers + details of the TREK bikes stolen earlier this week…

They stole 40 bikes and nobody saw them? Also I agree with the post about this providing free publicity. Before this story I’d never heard of Trek bikes. Now I know all about them and will make a beeline towards them when looking to buy a bike.

That trailer has been in that location for well over a year. It never crossed my mind they would actually leave stuff in it. I get nervous enough leaving stuff in secure warehouses behind secure fences in Fyshwick.

40 bikes, worth 300k, left in a trailer?! That’s $7,500 per bike…and instead of moving them into their business premises, the’re left outside in a trailer?

I actually hope there is something dodgy going on – it’s easier to digest than the absolute stupidity that must exist if nobody twigs to the fact that $300k worth of bikes left with nothing more than a lock protecting it isn’t such a great idea.

Maybe there were forty thieves and they rode away?

Let’s just hope Ali Baba is in town…

Well, Ali Baba is just a few doors down from Trek. Maybe they’ll try and smuggle them out piece by piece in the kebabs…

The trailer has been there on and off for several months at least, possibly over a year. I can’t remember when Trek moved there.

It’s almost as if whoever left the trailer there all weekend, with no apparent checks, knew that something was going to happen to it. Just sayin’.

I can’t imagine a secure trailer on townsville street over the weekend would EVER attract attention from dodgy types…!

wtf was it doing just outside ali baba for all that time. I can’t remember any bike shops around there?

Trek Australia is in Townsville St.

Gotcha.

All seems a bit dumb doesn’t it?

‘high performance models…’ Probably not like my Trek Allant then, which is perfect for the gruelling O’Connor to North Lyneham stage of the Tour de Shop. Big basket.

Well, I guess “secure” is a subjective assessment, which in this case would appear to be poorly applied.

And the thieves knew just which trailer to look in!

Yep! It’s a great big black trailer with TREK written all over it. Anyone driving through Fyshwick over the last few weeks would surely have seen it!
But otherwise, an unfortunate story – for TREK! 🙁

And the thieves knew just which trailer to look in!
