A man and a woman remain in custody this morning after an incident earlier today (Saturday, July 30) in which they allegedly assaulted a police officer.

The officer sustained a chipped tooth, a bleeding nose and facial scratches as a result of the attack.

The incident occurred around 4.15am today when members of the ACT Policing City Beats Team intervened in a disturbance outside the London Burgers and Beers Café Bar in Civic, in which one man was seen punching the window glass of the business premises.

When police approached the group of four people and sought to move them on, the alleged offender – an 18-year-old man from Page – lashed out and punched an officer in the face. Although he was then restrained, he remained extremely aggressive, swearing and violently resisting arrest.

While the alleged offender was being held, another member of the group, a 20-year-old woman from Reid, then attempted to intervene and kicked the arresting officer.

The offending pair were taken into custody and conveyed to the ACT Watch House, where they face a range of charges including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, resist arrest and causing harm to a Commonwealth official. Subsequent enquiries revealed the woman is on bail for previous offences in December last year, in which she assaulted police.

Now if they just start wearing parachure pants…..

The City Beats Team wouldn’t have much to do now. The best beat in Civic – the toilets under the stairs near the old ACTEW building – was closed down in late 2000 when the Wales Centre became the Waldorf Apartments, and the beat at Jolimont was closed down by Novotel after it was publicised on a gay cruising website.

Don’t be stupid, the Cops may not care about the general public, but for one of their own they’ll hunt him down like a dog

Did you read the article Einstein? They caught them, no need for your mythical ‘hunt’.

Use what little brains you have, Moron. They let him loose then hunt him down, there’s no fun without a chase.

Let him loose? They caught him Leonardo, hence the media release. I also am only in possession of 1 brain……clearly somewhat more functional and able to comprehend English than yours….or do you have ‘brains’?

Two incidents in two weekends involving 18yr olds getting nasty in Civic. Time to raise the drinking age and have a curfew for under 21s. Get the children off the streets.

to be honest, i dont think raising the drinking age will make a difference – just look at the US. I think a better idea is to introduce the drinking licenses which are used in NT (not sure if its been implemented yet?)

You get a license, which allows you to enter bottle-o’s (and buy booze), drink on your own property, and drink on a property where the owner also has a license. If you commit a drinking related offence, then you lose your license.

Then in March 2012, this same woman will be back in court for assaulting a Commonwealth official. If that does come true, this young “lady” (of sorts) knows when to not get caught.

“The most dangerous game”, perfect for that down time between footy and cricket.

In the 60s that media release would have ended ‘the offending pair are currently in the Royal Canberra Hospital in a stable condition, but were remanded in custody at a bedside Court hearing’

So correct Sir. Bring back the 60’s. Unfortunatelt there needs to be a review of the legislation with regards to assaulting AFP officers, its the same legislation that relates to assaulting a public servant. Not strong enough IMHO.

Assaulting a Police Officer – 5 years (minimum)

Assaulting a Police Officer causing ABH – 8 years (min).

Get this scum sucking vermin off the streets and out of our community.

I really hope that the Police officer is okay.
