ACT Policing has arrested a 25-year-old man, after he fled from police last night (Saturday, June 15).

Around 7.45pm police were conducting routine patrols in Lyneham when they attempted to intercept a vehicle acting in a suspicious manner.

Police activated their emergency lights and sirens indicating for the driver to stop, however the driver continued without stopping.

Police pursued the vehicle through the suburbs of Lyneham, Watson, Ainslie and Dickson before the deployment of ‘stop sticks’ saw the vehicle come to a stop at the University of Canberra in Bruce.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, however police found the man a short time later after a foot pursuit.

The pursuit lasted 12 minutes and reached a top speed of 125km/h.

The man was conveyed to the ACT Watch House where he was charged with numerous traffic-related offences including driving while disqualified.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow (Monday, June 17).

There should be a minimum mandatory penalty for driving disqualified. And if a disqualified driver tried fleeing, whatever car that minimum should include their car being cubed.

No, there really shouldn’t. Mandatory penalty is basically making the judicial system irrelevant. After all, why do we need judges who can apply, well, judgment, if all they do is to stamp the penalty already described in the legislation?

No, there really shouldn’t be any mandatory penalty. What there should be is judges that demonstrate some common sense, but I know that’s asking a lot.

Oh look he’s actually in a bit of trouble because the Chief Magistrate said that his “horrendous driving” was a repetition of previous offences so he will, surprisingly, get a little time off from casual roofing 🙂

What’s the bet he’ll be disqualified from driving as a deterrent to driving whilst disqualified?

That is a lay-down misere,he’ll be disqualified for a further period and depending on his previous record he might even get a suspended sentence!

I’m tired of the courts giving slack sentences. bundah is right. There will be a slap on the wrist and off you go……..

Wow, those cops are really picking up their game.
