Under cover of the Budget comes a big screw you to the Legislative Assembly and the musical community from Joy Burch as she announces the Fitters’ Workshop print conversion is going ahead despite committee reports and public campaigns to the contrary.
Ms Burch said the Committee’s report had provided no basis for the Government to abandon its longstanding commitment to use the vacant Fitters’ Workshop to accommodate Megalo, and lay a key plank in the establishment of a visual arts precinct in Kingston.
““The Committee’s reasoning and referencing of facts to support its conclusions was less than persuasive,” Ms Burch said.
“In the absence of new, evidence-based information arising in the Committee’s report, the Government sees no reason to break its promise, and to exacerbate the damage already done to Megalo Print Studio’s reputation by the Opposition and Greens.”

“ACT Labor’s decision to ignore the community and destroy the heritage and acoustic values of the Fitters’ Workshop is wrong, and to then bury the announcement on ACT Budget day is even worse,” Mrs Dunne said.
“ACT Labor has ignored the community and the Assembly’s wishes, and refused to even consider a multi-purpose facility which would have significant community advantages.
“ACT Labor has peddled the myth that the music community opposed the re-location of Megalo to the Kingston arts precinct, when they in fact believed the move would have created much-needed diversity in the Kingston arts precinct.
“ACT Labor has also misled the community and Megalo in particular that a re-location to the Fitters’ Workshop would be achieved by August this year. That was never going to be the case and the government knew it.
“Today, Joy Burch and ACT Labor had the chance to right their wrongs over the Kingston Arts precinct, and instead, they buried their shoddy decision and added to their continued failures over the Fitters’ Workshop,” Mrs Dunne concluded.
