Pussy Riot: Because we love a good protest…

By velosophist - 27 May 2012 25

Who/what is Pussy Riot?

This is Pussy Riot and here they are performing the “punk prayer” for which three of the band’s members are facing a 7-year jail sentence.

You might have heard of Pussy Riot before. Earlier this year they made news with their colourful performance of their song, “Putin Pissed Himself”. (Translation here.)

Amnesty International has declared the three women detained by the Russian authorities to be “prisoners of conscience” and has called for their immediate and unconditional release. (More details on the trial at www.freepussyriot.org)

Because I would like to shake their hand for flipping Putin the musical equivalent of the bird, I thought I might go and stand outside the Russian Embassy on Canberra Avenue with a cardboard sign, but then Melbourne had to go and be all rad and put on this amazing event last Sunday in support of Pussy Riot.

Do you know of any bands or other groups that might be interested in participating in a similar do in the Capital? Any thoughts/experiences/tips to share with regards to protesting in Canberra?

I’m not saying I agree with him, but Simon Jenkins has written an excellent piece which adds a huge amount of perspective to the Pussy Riot issue.

Well worth a read:

Now, just imagine me and my Heavy Metal Band broke into the Gungahlin Mosque to stage an impromptu protest-concert aimed at the Australian Islamic institutions?

How much support would you lot give me over that?

It depends – are you:

black metal
death metal
doom metal
glam metal
gothic metal
groove metal
post metal
power metal
speed metal
stoner metal
thrash metal
alternative metal
avante – garde metal
christian metal
crust punk
drone metal
extreme metal
folk metal
funk metal
grind core
industrial metal
metal core
neo – classical metal
nu metal
progressive metal
rap metal
sludge metal
symphonic heavy metal
traditional heavy metal
viking metal
death core
gory metal, or,
technical death core?

I think you need to be good before you can specialise…?

Are the australian islamic institutions oppresing you in any way, Henrybg?

johnboy 12:12 pm 24 Aug 12

Phillip Jenkins is not Simon Jenkins.

But if you want good perspective then Mark Ames is the place to go.

Reviving this. In the midst of our discussions about religious freedom and free speech, spare a thought for these women who were sentenced to two years in jail:
http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2012/s3570700.htm

Our Senate condemned the sentence:

The link to freepussyriot in the OP is still active.

The Orthodox Church’s excuse that it can’t intervene in a judicial process strikes me as a pathetic, almost Pontius Pilate position to take. In fact, it loves its closeness to Putin far more than acting to help the victims of that same authority. These women, in their exposing the links between the church and Putin, are much nearer to Christ’s actions in throwing out money-lenders and questioning mindless adherence to rules, than the rigid position of the church that won’t forgive them.

I’ve signed the petition, and my thoughts (for what they’re worth) are with these women.

With rather more to shout about.

Anyway this website is generally in favour of harmless rioting, and this variety in particular!
