The Canberra Times brings word of plans by QIC to convert the last carpark left on Cooyong Street into apartments, office space, and another slew of retail.

The development application proposed demolishing an existing outdoor car park along Cooyong Street and building a mixed-use development with multiple towers up to 14 storeys high.

They will comprise two basement levels of car parking and ground and first floor commercial tenancies with pedestrian access bridges across Narellan Street to the Canberra Centre.

A third floor, above-ground car park will have a vehicular access bridge across Scotts Crossing to the existing Canberra Centre car park.

But just because they’ve applied doesn’t mean they’ll get it.

Even more retail over that way will really spell the end of the last few shops in that block that houses RB’s, Onya Bike and Centrepoint. But that is what QIC wanted all along. A bit like Westfield in Bondi Junction.

So how does this all fit in with our CBD masterplan…We do have one don’t we?

A building there has been in the plans since they started the redevelopment. I thought they had put in a DA for it back with the rest, but maybe it’s been so long they had to resubmit, or they modified the design.

Well, you can see why they’d do this. There’s a desperate shortage of retail (and offices) in Canberra.

BTW, the new Big W/Woolies/Dick Smith shops at the old brand depot will also include 40 small specialty shops. Bet the evicted tenants of Brand Depot will be fascinated to hear that.
