Quad copter for hire this weekend?

Hi all,

We have not had much luck locating a quad copter/hexacopter type machine (and pilot) to take some footage at Million Paws Walk this Sunday 19 May – any suggestions from Rioters?

We would like to obtain about an hours worth of footage of the crowd at Stage 88 and the immediate surrounds, as well as some footage of the walk itself around the lake after it begins.

Ideally we are looking for an experienced pilot to minimise the risk of a crash-landing on someone’s head.

We’re expecting 10K+ attendees with 4000 dogs and we would like to record this event given the centenary. Apparently the Skywhale is not available…

TIA

If you can’t get a quadcopter, a camera affixed to a lightpole near the end of King’s Avenue Bridge would get footage of the entire walk! I’m sure you could get permission. Good luck with it.

I’ll be rethinking my donation next time I see a collection for the RSPCA if you’re wasting money on gimmicky videos – just get a guy with a iphone on the bridges if you want a high shot or up a ladder any where for that matter.

Sounds like a job for Skywhale!

Going by the last line of the RSPCA article above, they already tried that.

Sounds like a job for Skywhale!

Thankfully, almost everyone does the right thing. As for the rest, the Poop Police will have their eyes peeled.

That’s good to hear.

It could have been worse for the Poop Police I guess, you could be asking them to keep their noses to the ground.

I just hope the poop doesn’t hit the fan…

That’s a lot of crap that some owners won’t be picking up!

Thank you for the responses above, some interesting information.

The guys at RC fiends fly around Canberra.

You could try and get in touch with them:

That’s probably because there’s varying interpretations on the legality of using quadcopters for profit.

The main interpretation is that if you are not using them for recreational or hobby purposes, then you must obtain a full pilot and helicopter license to legally fly a quatcopter, there are I think 2 operators around Canberra that fulfill these requirements, and they are quite expensive.

And there’s not a lot of clarity around flying them in First Person View even for recreational ues.

Here’s a list of companies certified to do aerial photography using UAVs.

Odds are CASA would consider this a commercial activity and therefore only a certified operator can legally do this. It’s very unlikely that any of them would accept the job though as it’s very dangerous, and against regulations, to fly over crowds. There are some exceptions but that requires special permission from CASA which is long drawn out process.
