I am a student looking for a quality gym near Civic, Ainslie or Dickson. Hopefully I can get fit. I am looking for a price around $10 – $20 a week.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

I agree that you should start with some youtube stuff involving pushups, squats, pullups etc.
Do this for a month and then hit the gym !

Most of those youtube videos shows how to do calisthenics.
I would reckon to hit the gym, lift heavy, bring some gains !
You tube is not what you are looking for.

I have an idea: for *free*, you can go for a walk around the lake at 0630hrs every morning.

Additionally, you can not watch TV, you can not eat junk food, and you can use your legs to get places wherever possible.

Also, you can visit one of the fitness stations in various places around the city. Here is a video I shot at the start of the year at the Chifley fitness station:

Fantastic work!

Let’s face it though: people don’t want a gym membership so they can get fit. They want it because the gym is a meat market.

These tips will not just save you the cost of a gym membership, but they will likely also save you the cost of a trip to the VD clinic in the future.

Extra tip. Find two fitness centres, walk between them, touch the doors and walk home.

The only thing they’ll lighten is your wallet. Certainly not your mood after several months of trying and just shelling out for an aspiration, not a reality.

You will not only get some much needed sunshine, it will reduce your appetite, and give you either relaxation time or time to listen to study related material.

Fitness centres are models of what is wrong in our lives. They are poor substitutes for real exercise as part of your every day life, charge you heaps for the bait and switch, and use a lot of power indoors so you can watch more dumbass telly whilst walking/running on a machine inside a gloomy smelly airconditioned building instead of the outdoors which everyone seems to be so afraid of today.

Running at lunchtime in winter, and in the morning in the rest of the year, is fabulous in Canberra! More variety, better exercise, great scenery, clean air, cheaper!

Agreed!!!

Hahahaha. Classic.

I’ve always advised starters there’s a stack of YouTube videos of your preferred workout. If your trying to get Beach ready, or ready for a summer sport, just punch in “sports conditioning for cricket” for example. Or the 15 minute workout, or getting fit on a budget. I’d do this before throwing my hard earned into the fitness industry, as we all have different preferences….

Excellent question, and I’d appreciate similar information although my ideal gym would be one that is open 24/7 or opens very early in the morning.

I’d also recommend trying before buying. The last thing you want is to get locked into a 12 months contract only to realize later that the gym you joined doesn’t work for you. The ANU Fitness Centre doesn’t require long commitments and I think Club Lime has flexible memberships via onlime.com.au.

Can’t comment on the quality of either though, as I exercise outdoors or at home.

Are you a student at ANU? If so, the ANU Fitness Centre on campus is your best bet, students get great discounts there. Even if you’re not, it’s a great environment there, good value, plenty of variety of machines and free weights, a separate room for the gigantic steroid idiots, and the personal trainers are good value in every sense.

If not, TEAM Fitness near the Dickson Tradies is also good. Or (apologies, can’t tell your gender from your nickname on here) there’s a Curves at Dickson too if you prefer being in an all female environment.

A lot of gyms offer a ‘trial period’ membership, call around a few in the area and you can go in and check them out, ‘try before you buy’ sort of thing.

Good luck with getting fit!
