Quangers eating out happy ending.

I’m not sure how many rioters make the border crossing, but there’s a good reason to. I went for dinner last night at Walsh’s pub in Queanbeyan – yes the site of the infamous two-up non-riot. My friends and I go there occasionally because the food is good – really good. It’s not your standard pub schnitzel and steak, so it costs a little more, but its worth it.

Last night I went with a friend, and he was put in charge of ordering food while I organised drinks. I wanted the chicken off the specials board that comes with prawns – a surf and barnyard if you like. When the food was brought to the table, I was given the standard chicken schnitzel. We enquired of the waitress who went back to the kitchen, then came back with the docket to show that my friend had in fact ordered and paid for the standard dish.

The waitress offered to take it away and have the kitchen prepare the special for me. I declined that kind offer as the mistake was ours, and it was a good looking schnitzel. As I was tucking in, and enjoying it, she came back over with a dish of the prawns that go with the special, and told me that the chef wanted me to have the prawns anyway. They come in a lovely garlickly creamy sauce and were, dare I say it, perfectly cooked.

My mate had salmon, and I didn’t pay enough attention to describe it, but he thought it was the best salmon he’d ever eaten. High praise indeed.

The reason I’m submitting this post is yes, to alert people to the great pub food at Walsh’s, but also because the service was above and beyond. It wins the hearts and minds and I want to tell people about it.

Are there no vegetarians in Queanbeyan?

They used to be but I believe that the government relocated them all to redfern just prior to the Olympic Games.

What?

That would be a reason to move…

Tolerance Towards Tofu is Tops. Recite that as you cycle to Quangers.

After reading this I checked out the menu on their website. It’s been a very long time since I saw a menu without a single vegetarian option! So I suppose I’ll never experience the great service.

Coming down Canberra Ave / Monaro St from Fyshwick, Tourist is on the left, Walsh’s on the right, then the Royal on the left corner.

Many, many moons ago, one of the best places to visit for breakfast in Quangers was the Hotel Queanbeyan (aka Top Pub), where Uriarra and Crawford Streets merge. Nothing quite like sitting in the beer garden, tucking into a big brekkie and a beverage, after coming off a night shift.

Is that the one on the left or the right of the main street? (as you come into QBN)

I can never remember.

While Micheal (if i recall correctly) the head chef there is a nightmare to deal with inside the work place (i worked in the bottleshop for a period of time years back) his customer service is impeccable, and this story does not surprise me at all. It’s just a pity he has a history of treating his staff not so well considering his food and customer service is impeccable, but thats what you get with Chef’s i guess 😛

Good post MsCheeky.

I loved the bit where “the chef wanted me to have the prawns anyway”.
He is sure to get a job in any ACT fine dining establishment with that sort of generosity.

Thanks for posting.

I’ve eaten at Walsh’s a number of times and I agree that the food is excellent. They have the best chicken parmigiana I’ve come across and I’ve had some good steaks too. Well worth the money.

Sometimes the food takes a 45 minutes or so, but that’s fine when the quality is there.

A show of good faith like that always makes me want to visit a pave(even if it is in qbn)

While I’m glad that Walsh’s food has improved in the 16 years since I used to drink/eat there, I must protest. The title of this article is misleading… where’s the happy ending?

On a more serious note, I’d be happy if MsCheeky was to provide regular feedback; knowing where to get a reasonable feed in Quangers will come in handy.
