The Canberra Times reports that Queanbeyan City Council’s High Court tilt at what they get charged for water be Actew has been shot down unanimously.

The judges’ decision to dismiss the appeal finally brings certainty regarding the future of millions of dollars in charges paid into the territory’s coffers.

Although the council at one point decided to withhold money from the ACT because of the legal fight, Mr Overall said the city had since been paying up and would not have to foot a mammoth bill.

The legal costs are totally funded from Council’s reserves in the water fund and will not impact on the services Council provides

Righto, it’s all OK because we already took the money off you and your services have already been affected.

No doubt they have plenty of residents skilled in the art of discreet night-time syphoning.

Pretty sure I read today that Queanbeyan would have to pay their own costs, but had a fund already to cover it.

Although I would have thought that meant that while rate payers might not have to make extra payments to cover the legal cost, that is only because they already have paid them.

My understanding is that if the High Court agrees to hear a case the commonwealth picks up the tab. Not sure if it applies here.

From the article:

“The Queanbeyan Mayor Tim Overall said legal costs incurred would not be passed on to the border town’s rate payers.”

So they are going to pay their legal bills with magic money?
