Queanbeyan man pleads not guilty to internet grooming

Thumper 5 July 2007 2

The canberra Times is reporting that a 43 year of Queanbeyan man has pleaded not guilty yesterday to two counts of using the internet to groom a child under 16 years of age.

Police allege that Johnny Oshana had obtained the girl’s mobile phone number through a chatroom, and had persistently sent her text messages and called her in a bid to meet her. They also allege that Oshana sent the girls explicit messages and images online.

Oshana will appear in court again later this month.

The allegations of online grooming of young girls are only part of this story. When Oshana first appeared in court to apply for bail, the Canberra Times reported allegations that graphic child pornography had been found on Oshana’s computer. The images were so graphic the magistrate apparently supressed many details. Police were reported to be searching for victims depicted in the images. For some reason Canberra Times did not publish this original story online.

Oshana was reported to have been using the anonymity of the internet to lure young, vulnerable girls into underage sex. It’s alledged that MSN messenger was his hunting ground to befriend young girls, have sexually explicit converstations with them and obtain their phone numbers.

Great work by the police to bring this alledged serious peodophile before the courts. This is also a timely warning to parents of young children who use the internet and have mobiles. All such communication needs to be supervised by parents. In this information age, peodophiles now have greater tools to secretly access children without parent’s knowlege.
