Queer Country Town Spectacle - Possibly The Work Of Rival Quilters!!!!!

Only One Day To Go!!!

Apparently Q.U.I.L.T (Queers United In Little Towns) has caused a bit of a stir amongst the residents of sleepy Braidwood!

The owners of a Braidwood retail outlet at which we now regularly shop, told us that what appears to have started as satirical take on the actual Quilt Event, has attracted considerably more attention than anticipated! They have no idea who the group that have set it up actually are. That seems to be the general case, as there are various rumours circulating around Braidwood as to who’s behind the event. As I wrote in a previous post, on a weekend visit to Braidwood back in October, we met a very good spirited bunch of (I’d say) “50 somethings” in the pub; they claimed to be the orginising committee! Our Braidwood connection can’t work out who they are. I’m very suspicious that they are operatives from the Bungendore Quilting Ladies in an attempt to take the focus away from Braidwood’s Quilt Event, which is on the same weekend!!!!!!!

Apparently the national newspapers have been asking questions. I’m a journalist and I know that it has sparked some interest amongst my colleauges.

The latest from the Q.U.I.L.T website – http://quiltevent.wordpress.com/ reports that there will be a giant patchwork quilt of “leather and latex” suspended by manacles as part of the “Hanging of The Quilts,” the highlight of the Braidwood Quilt Event.

The whole thing is bloody funny – It would be hilarious to see a bunch of folk dressed as if they were heading to the Sydney Mardis Gras, sharing the streets with the Quilting ladies of Braidwood.

I have cut and pasted this image and caption from the site – Very Funny!!!

Pictured above, wearing a very fetching, backless quilted smoking jacket is long time Braidwood resident & QUILT patron, Air Chief Marshal Percival Mandrill-Morton (RAF) formally of the 69th Bare Arsed Bomber Squadron, who flew 27 missions over occupied Europe in bra and panties

If the “gay quilt” organisers are taking the piss out of a quilt festival organised by country ladies by holding theirs on the same weekend, then I think they are deadsh*ts – as much as if they ridiculed the culture in an Indigenous community. No-one would be sanctioning that, now would they?

It’s great to see such cultural awareness here!

Tens of thousands of years of culture, spirituallity and connectivity with the land is being compared to a bunch of tea drinking nannas getting together to sew up a few doonas from scraps of their hubby’s old undies!!!

Pleeeeeeeease!

Native Australians didn’t even WEAR undies until Europeans arrived.

This just keeps getting funnier!!!

I think that we can safely say that there’s a definite rivalry between the Bungendore and Braidwood Quilt Events!!

A friend who lives in Bungendore has informed me that there’s a big van with a dirty great sign on it, diverting motorists to the Braidwood Quilt Event, parked on the roadside on the approaches to Bungendore from Canberra!!

There’s a war going on here folks – I think it’s obvious that the Bungendore Quilters are responsible for Q.U.I.L.T!!

I’m soooo glad that I moved to Canberra. I lived in Sydney for my whole life before moving here and not in a million years of living there, would I have considered contributing to a forum entry about quilting!!!!

Has anyone got independent verification that this ‘event’ actually exists? It looks an awful lot like a hoax to me. The complete lack of contact details or a program on what claims to be its website are a bit of a giveaway.

Fair play – Verifiable or not, the whole thing is pretty bloody funny. It’s got an Ern Malley vibe to it!

A journo friend of mine did a little digging and discovered that the whole thing has got a few backs up. He spoke to one person who has repeatedly heard from various townsfolk that a local “journalist” has been accusing him of setting up the whole thing, yet he claims to have nothing to do with it. Apparently, the accused person has even bought in a QC friend from Sydney as he’s going to slap a dirty great defamation case on his accuser!

Even that is bloody funny! Accusation of what? It’s simply an invitation for people with particular interests to enjoy the bucolic and pastoral frivolity of a quaint country town. It just happens to coincide with a Quilt festival. Defamed how? had someone accused the person in question of organising the Sydney Olympics, would he or she feel defamed. Maybe the accused person feels defamed because the event is associated with “queers!” That just makes that person a bigot, but all the same, no more defamed!

The smaller the town, the less to do, the more they bicker!

Their ‘British newspaper’ is entirely unverifiable without further infomation, such as date\time\name of publication.
You’d think a webpresence for an event would be all over giving good information & press clippings…
