Prime Minister Gillard has announced that Bill Shorten’s mother in law is going to have an extended term as Governor-General:

Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO was appointed as Australia’s 25th Governor-General in September 2008.

I am pleased to announce that Her Majesty The Queen, on my advice, has agreed that Ms Bryce will serve as Governor-General for an extended term until March 2014.

It probably does a bit of a favour to a possible incoming Liberal Government to not have a new five year Labor appointee taking up the office next year.

That’s right. They could have done a John Howard and stacked the position with one of their favoured ones (Bomber Beazley, perhaps?) just to make life difficult should there be a change of office.

A bit like Sir William Deane – Paul Keating’s present to John Howard.

And Micheal Kirby.

That will be handy for Shorty, if he gets handed the keys to the Lodge prior to next election.

But of course Abbott will not recognise this clearly bipartisan approach.

She seems to be doing very well in the role. From what I hear she is incredibly hard working and puts in amazing hours that would shame someone half her age.
