Radio Ratings

Just caught up on the radio ratings.

I am struck that they really reflect my listening habits. It seems that many other Canberrans listen to the same programs as I do.

Like many, I pretty much listen to 666 most of the time. The only exception is their drive program which I see has suffered a big drop in already low ratings. I actually listen to a CD instead of having to listen to Louise Maher who does the show. Surely the abc management can hear that she is really quite woeful.

It’s a shame really, I would much rather be able to listen to 666 at that time but they would need to move maher to the graveyard shift when I am snug as a bug in bed

Does anyone else get as annoyed as me with the drive program (don’t start me on that carmody weather guy on ABC TV).

[ED – our earlier coverage of the radio ratings is also available]

Ross Solly blows chunks. BOO!

I’m not really a fan of 666 during the day, mostly because I don’t like Ross Solly’s style. Louise Maher is also a bit grating at times, but better than Solly. However while gerrymander is in bed I’m often listening to Ton Del Roy’s Nightlife and if Maher gets moved into that time slot I will hold gerrymander responsible and fit him/her with some concrete shoes, haha!

Well-balanced candidates? Who decides that……or even if these candidates listen to much radio?
You made a great point when you mentioned tabloid current affairs. What people will admit to watching/listening and what they actually consume is seldom the same. That there is just another reason to doubt the latest ratings.

Sorry, poor word choice on my behalf. An even or indicative spread of people polled. I know little of the science of these things, but I remember hearing a story some time ago about how the Readers Digest surveys in the US of voting intentions are usually way off beam in the years the Democrats got/get in. The polls apparently always show a Republican win, but because Readers Digest readers are apparently notoriously white bread Republicans, even if they survey millions of Americans, they get the wrong result.

Don’t quote me; I just remember hearing a report on it some years ago.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in the latest radio ratings. The survey was of a mere 1800 locals (out of 300,000+) and done during the Olympics period when most people were watching TV instead. Next survey period should give us a better clue of who was listening to what.

1800 well-balanced candidates can often be more instuctive and meaningful than 50,000 unbalanced respondents.

NB: that’s a comment on the scope of the views, not whether or not the individuals are well-balanced of themselves. Anyone, say, who openly admits to watching tabloid commercial “current affairs” (sic) shows really should go into the room of mirrors and take a good hard look at themselves, and yet they remain so popular.

I don’t geddit.

Er, point of clarification on my post @ #9. I don’t have a problem with Canberra radio per se — vive le diversite and all that — not everything is going to punch everyone’s buttons (no pun intended).

I haven’t listened to a lot of ABC 666 lately, but my memory of Louise Maher is pretty positive.

Spoonbill, don’t forget that the comment ‘Louise Maher is quite woeful’ from the OP is saying ‘I THINK ~ ~ ~’ and if you read other posts by the OP you’ll work out how much value to attach to that.

I couldn’t pick Louise Maher out of a line-up, but she’s MC-ing a big night this Wednesday of which I’ll post more of on the morrow.

I think Louise Maher is excellent. Gerrymander what is wrong with her style?

I don’t bother with Canberra radio at all. Too parochial. I prefer to listen to serious radio over the Net.

I would too if I had unlimited bandwidth and download, Jake, as there are some sensational stations out there on the World Wide Weird, and if you’re plugged in to the US, I can get some great community/college stations that are pumping out great breakfast programs as I’m getting in late at night or in the wee small hours.

Just out of interest, what sort of station(s) do you listen to on the net?

“So why don’t you send an email to them offering your services, (I would be happy to help start a partition)”

Maybe Riotact needs one too, to “screen” out spell checker addicts (or even pedants like me 🙂 )

I prefer louise maher to ross solly – mornings 666

I agree fully.
So why don’t you send an email to them offering your services, (I would be happy to help start a partition) because i personally think that radio in most capital cities has failed to keep up with TV, however most workplaces can only listen to the radio.

What we need is a volenteer radio station with individual people and individual views so that everyone gets asay and a chance to play their music
