Raidernomics, it's a hell of a way to run a Territory

Now here’s a depressing story in the Canberra Times.

It seems the ACT Government has just dropped a lazy million on the upgrade of the Raiders’ training facility at Bruce.

But wait, it’s OK, the Raiders are just tenants!

Well, not the sort of tenancy that the likes of you and I get offered. The 20 year lease costs the Raiders $1 a year for the buildings and $160 for the oval.

But wait! Apparently this is a quid pro quo for the money the Raiders spent on Canberra Stadium in the 90’s!

Well that’s alright then?

Yeh no worries, there are some wildly fluctuating figures in those tables, sonme clubs doing the right thing, some not so much

Half of the trouble is learning how to read the reports, most of that is simply making sense of the reporting, and the remaining half is presenting them in a way people want to hear.

Community Contributions only make sense in isolation, when comparing the same club to itself year to year.
Ranking of Groups\Clubs by relative Community Contributions (as opposed to Revenue and treating contibutions as a sideline) is less useful than actual revenues, in that places like Murrumbidgee Country Club come out streets ahead by declaring all expenditure on thir own facilities as ‘Sport Contributions’, even though in excess of their actual Gaming Revenue.

(IE: Do you say “Club X contributed $190,000 in excess of minimum requirements”, or “Club X contributed 3000% of what was required of them (because they are a tiny operation)”?

My house needs an upgrade. Can I have $1M please?

No? How about if I get a BJ from a dog?

Bah, said income, meant revenue.
Gross Gaming Machine Revenue.

Havent done one in a while, but have a model of ACT Gaming revenues accurate to within 2.5% of after-the-fact budget figures. 😀

By income do you mean turnover, machine profits or profits after expenses ?

…surely their pokies revenue is a better revenue stream to provide for improvements to the Stadium and training facilities???

Pull the other one, it has bells on.
Canberra Raiders Club Group received $15,648,931 in poker machines income, but only only spent $872,999 ($252,089 over mandatory minimum) on Community Contribution activities in 2009-2010.

Of that $872,999:
83% to Sport activities
10% to Non-Profit activities
3 % to Charity\Social Welfare activities
2% on Women’s Sport
1% on Problem Gambling management.

If you want definition of those categories, read the Report yourself.

Didn’t the ACT Government recently throw $25 mil the way of the GWS AFL team to play 3 games a year here, and bail out the Brumbies with several hundred thousand when one of their sponsors pulled out. Given the Raiders have invested more in the Canberra and region community and over a longer period of time, $1mil for a facilities upgade doesn’t seem unreasonable.

Depressing indeed. I’m currently on leave, and when I read this in the coffee shop copy of the CT a few hours ago I almost vomited all over the table.

This sort of crap is the reason why I subsequently let out a whoop of joy when I heard Stanhope announcing his resignation on the radio a few minutes later.

From the ridiculous to the sublime.

It costs $400ish for a club to hire Greenway Oval for 4 hours for a game.
I want to get in on the Raiders deal!
