Raiders buy or getout

I have just sat through the most pathetic game of what is purported to be rugby league served up by Brisbane Broncos and the Canberra Raiders and Brisbane did nothing wrong, so work it out.

Please buy some footballers Canberra or throw in the towel and get out of the NRL.

The Raiders are so slow dim witted they lumber around like decrepit old men, which it must be said, some really are: White, Campese Shillington and Tilse or if they aren’t then they certainly give that impression. Apart from 4 or 5 they wouldn’t get a game with any other NRL side. It has been going on for to long either get serious or get out. They are fast becoming the laughing stock of the league the only thing supporters have to look forward to is the wooden spoon, something Ricky knows lot about and can add to his two others.

If anyone is interested Brisbane flogged Canberra 28 to 4. I give a lot of credit to the commentators trying to make it sound like Canberra might get back into it, but of course they never ever looked like it.

Oh and the crowd – a poultry 8000 – is any of this getting through Raiders administration?

No-one wants to come to cold Canberra with no beach. This is a city of subtle charms, and rugby league players are not subtle!

Imagine a team that had Carney, Ferguson and Dugan all hitting their prime. All three players were kicked out or left through no fault of the Raiders management (that I’m aware of). The strategy of building up local/southern NSW juniors is sound, they have just been very unlucky of late. The NRL should also do more to reward clubs that develop local talent since it is a long tail hard yakka investment.

Agrree with the others but Carney certainly isn’t hitting his prime. Has a chronic injury problem that may never be fixed.

People are talking about how the Raiders should buy players and hence a premiership. But the problem is more far-reaching than that. As the Raiders’ unofficial historian who has posted news reports about the Raiders grand final wins and appearances on YouTube, the fact is that the team’s strength back then was junior development and utilising players from the southern region. Extra news reports I recorded but haven’t posted on YT detail the Raiders victories in the lower grades and schoolboy competitions.

The Raiders back then was a team with depth. Remember that in 1990 all grades won the premiership except the reserves who lost in extra time. When Mal Meninga was injured in 1989 the reserves came to the rescue and the Raiders made – and won – the grand final. When John Lomax was suspended in 1994 Paul Osborne stepped up to the plate and helped win the grand final against Canterbury. The Green Machine was just that. When a part of the machine was broken another part could be slotted in and the machine worked as new.

Now we are finding that invariably all grades are losing by big margins. The development of juniors just isn’t happening anymore and the club lacks depth. You need to have that basis to build a team, you can’t just buy a premiership. The Raiders need a total rethink about their competitive strategy because the team has been in decline since the Super League days in the 1990s.

There was a segment on 7.30 last week about Sandor Earl who is currently living in Thailand. Sandor says after the drug accusations against him have been totally withdrawn he would like to return to the NRL. Over to you Ricky Stuart.

Another thing is why do most of the players in the leading NRL teams look twice as big as those at the other end of the ladder. Even if one spends all day, everyday in a gym they don’t end up buffed like that.

It must be the Weet Bix.

They have been trying – mightily – to buy players.

I agree that the Raiders need to get some new players who actually want to be here and they definitely need to play with a bit more heart.

But 1948, you’ve been making these “Raiders Wooden Spoon” and “Raiders Should Leave the NRL” posts for the last 3-4 years and it still hasn’t happened yet. I think you need to see someone about your unhealthy obsession with the Raiders losing. Or do you simply enjoy the pain?

I suggest you swap codes and start watching GWS…. in saying that at least they have heart.

Sounds like a lot of people chickened out…

Classic eggsample of a team falling fowl of it’s local support base.

When do they meet the Roosters again?

Judging by your previous posts you are obviously a very frustrated Raiders supporter. Who are the 4-5 players you mention the club should keep?
