Raiders crawl off the mat to bollock the Storm 40 points to 12

Foxsports records the incredible as the cellar dwelling Canberra Raiders put the high flying Melbourne Storm to the sword last night.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy admitted he was embarrassed with his team’s performance in a 40-12 defeat by Canberra Raiders at AAMI Park on Saturday night which leaves the ladder-leaders teetering with three losses in their past four matches.

Raiders winger Edrick Lee helped himself to a hat-trick of tries, newly-signed Sandor Earl grabbed a double and centre Blake Ferguson and fullback Reece Robinson were brilliant as the NRL’s top guns were turned into pop guns.

My original assertion is that after calling for Furner’s head for the majority of this season, those supporters of the Raiders that took part in that on this forum are now quiet as it unravels that some player changes have brought results. I was pointing at those supporters, not the team.

Yes, I am a Brumbies fan and member, not sure about a fanboy. Believe it or not, I also go to Raiders games, but am neither a supporter nor member. Happy to continue this discussion if you wish, but I think it’s rather fruitless.

What have the Brumbies got to do with the Raiders?

Not much really. But when a Gumbies fanboy like Duffbowl starts trolling on a Raiders thread about the “Faiders” and bandwagons and fairweather supporters, you’ll forgive Raiders fans like me for pointing out a few home truths about the fickleness of Gumby supporters.

As for having a “massive chip on my shoulder” about the Brumbies, I think you’ll find that most Raiders fans (and most people generally, esp outside Canberra) aren’t actually vitally interested in what the Brumbies are doing, and don’t go around in a huff because their team can’t emulate the amazing feats of Jake White’s men. Hard to believe, I know.

However, to a disinterested observer, the Brumbies’ success this season largely consists of having kicked more penalty goals than their opponents. Sounds like the height of tedium to me. Indeed, comparing the highlight reels of both of Saturday’s games should tell you that no Raiders fan has anything to be jealous of. Your boys won by scoring one converted try and kicking four penalty goals. We won by scoring eight tries and converting four. I’ll take multiple tries over multiple penalty goals any day of the week, and I suspect you would too if the Brumbies were the tryscorers.

If I’ve used any big words you don’t understand, or maybe you struggle with your crayons when adding up, I’m sure someone will be able to help you…

It’s nice to see that Gumby fans haven’t lost their misguided sense of superiority. Perhaps not surprising though, given that it’s about all they’ve got.

Dammit, you’ve stumped me with your logic again.
Brumbies get more people per game.
Brumbies hold the record for largest crowd at Canberra Stadium.
Three premierships in 30 years against two in sixteen.

Yep, we’re very misguided…

I was referring to your assertion that I used crayons and couldn’t understand big words. Thought that quoting that assertion might have given you a bit of a hint that I was referring to it.

I won’t deny the Brumbies support dropped off last year. From early attendances of 13227, 16027 and 18011, they finished with 10122, 10311, and 11777.

Let’s look at this year so far. Brumbies have drawn an average of 14828 per home game.

So in other words, when the Gumbies were playing like crap in 2011, no one went to their games. Now that they’re winning in 2012, people are going to their games again. What were you saying in your original post about fairweather supporters?

If you care to look at my original post, you’ll see it says

Duffbowl said :

No, of course not, no one is ever a fairweather supporter…

This was directed at supporters of Canberra teams in general. There has been several discussions about this in the past, with very little in the way of dissention.

Lots of dumb crap

What have the Brumbies got to do with the Raiders? Sounds like you’e got a massive chip on your shoulder that they’re doing well, and the Raiders are their usual disappointing selves…

Where are the Faiders supporters, baying for the blood of Furner? Or have they changed bandwagons?

No, of course not, no one is ever a fairweather supporter…

Changed bandwagons to where? The Gumbies? Not likely, unless they wanted to watch inferior athletes kicking to each other and re-setting scrums ad infinitum rather than scoring tries. In which case, good riddance.

Besides, how many supporters were the Gumbies getting to their games at the end of last season, before Jake White started running things? Yep, about fifty.

The bandwagon I was referring to was the “Furner had it right all along” Commodore ute, which I imagine is belching smoke slowly down the GDE as we speak.

Raiders scoring tries? Only in the last two games. I’ll give them their due, Croker is having a great season, having scored 132. That means the other players have scored 197 between them.

I won’t deny the Brumbies support dropped off last year. From early attendances of 13227, 16027 and 18011, they finished with 10122, 10311, and 11777. Funnily enough, so did the Raiders (13450, 16146, and 12165, finishing with 10425, 12150, and 10085). Averaged out, the Brumbies attracted 13103 bums on seats per game, while the Raiders attracted 12419. Obviously the Raiders really do draw the crowds… oh wait.

Let’s look at this year so far. Brumbies have drawn an average of 14828 per home game, while the Raiders have drawn 10272 per home game. The Raiders have played one more home game than the Raiders, and have drawn 17066 less overall. With any luck, the Raiders will only require three, maybe four, more home games to have the same attendance for their season as the Brumbies did.

If I’ve used any big words you don’t understand, or maybe you struggle with your crayons when adding up, I’m sure someone will be able to help you…

We wuz robbed in the last game against this mob so it’s nice to get one back. and how. According to Peter Fitzsimons in the SMH, Ricky Stuart is a certainty to be coaching the Raiders next year. I’d hate to be the halfback if that happens.

slightly OT but how long has it been since the raiders and the brumbies won away games on the same weekend ? Noice.

The coach has at last discovered the Raiders have a backline and a couple of young, enthusiastic wingers. Maybe the board will stop buying semi-retired players from now on.
Great effort from Raiders nevertheless – all the commentators are focusing on the fact that Smith & Slater were missed by The Storm while not mentioning Dugan, Campese and White are not playing for the Raiders.
If the Raiders can string three wins on the trot I’ll be back.
