Raiders defeat Tigers in comeback win

The Canberra Raiders have overcome a diabolical first half effort (not to mention a 14 point deficit) to defeat the Wests Tigers 30-24 at Canberra Stadium today.

A downpour half an hour before kickoff ensured the match was played under tricky conditions – but this was no excuse for the ineffective gameplay of the Raiders in the first half, allowing the Tigers some easy points.

Despite repeated handling errors and an uninspired attack, the Raiders still managed two tries in the first half to go to the break with 10 points on the board in response to the Tigers 24.

The second half was a totally different story for the Raiders as they yet again kept their opponents scoreless in the second half whilst managing to post four tries – including an impressive breakaway try from Carney and two tries from Adrian Purtell to put together a hattrick.

The game was also the first time the Raiders and Tigers contested a new perpetual trophy to celebrate the greatest grand final ever – the 1989 Winfield Cup.

Thurling wasplaced on report for a lifting tackle – a decision that I’m sure won’t even make it to judiciary.

Whilst the Raiders will be happy to come away with their second home game win of the season (one that should see them enter the top eight) there are, as per usual, plenty of concerns to address – particularly on the defensive wing of Purtell and with the kicking game of our halves – Campese in particular.

The next challenge for the Raiders will be against the Melbourne Storm on Monday the 21st of April here at home. Kickoff will be at 7pm.

ALSO: Be sure to check out the brand new “Raiders TV” – a mini-Footy Show dedicated to the Raiders. The ‘show’ is screened via the Raiders website – check it out at www.raiders.com.au/tv. My understanding is that it is updated each Thursday.

Bronx Goodwin is doing great in #1 if you ask me. Why change it now? He wants to play there, and is doing a great job. I say leave him there. I haven’t heard of Herbert, perhaps he will get a run soon.

we have marc herbert who looks very promising at halfback and he is only 19 but compared to campese who has had 3 seasons and never really done much i think we need to look at somebody else. We should of used zillman at 5/8 as he was playing that in the old premier league before moving up. another one is why dont we play phil graham at fullback?

mclinden is still overseas in the super league. i dont even know how he gets a game there

What a great game that was. Go the Raiders!

Sinner, I don’t know about having Monaghan at 7. Campese isn’t too bad, who else is there?

PS: Whatever happened to Mclinden ???

i was at the game yesterday and there was nothing better than giving it back to a tigers supporter in front of me who had plenty to say about canberra until we hit the lead.
I agree though that the defense on the wing of purtell is a worry as has been for a while now. Also campese offers nothing for us a 5/8. i dont even understand why we are trying to re sign him as a priority when he has never developed into anything spectacular. lets not make the mistake of holding campese when he will never be anything just like when we held mclinden for ever and a day when he was never going to be a star player.
Id like to know if any other raiders supporters out there would like to see a return of another monaghan to play halfback and put carney at 5/8. seriously i dont see how that could be worse than campese playing in the halves and especially as we struggle to recruit i think bringing michael monaghan back to australia to play NRL with the right offer would be to tempting for him to refuse. our attack would nearly be complete then, Withers at hooker, monaghan at half carney at 5/8 then all we need is a decent fullback.
any thoughts?

Except that for the next two weeks, there won’t be a show as CIT is on holidays.
