Raiders fans set the abuse bar high

The Australian informs us that following the example set by Canberra Raiders’ fans three weeks ago extra measures are being prepared to protect the dirty cheating Melbourne Storm players from other fans.

PARRAMATTA’s Paul Osborne yesterday offered increased security for Melbourne Storm on Friday night as the teams prepare for a grand final rematch.

At Canberra on May 15, fans hung over the fence waving $50 bills at players. The players also received verbal abuse, and Osborne doesn’t want a repeat.

“There was a few dramas in Canberra so we just wanted to find out if they wanted some extra security from the bus to the sheds and things like that,” Osborne said. “They’ve going to get heckled but we don’t need any other dramas.”

The Eels chief also sent an email to club members.

It’s good to see Canberra fans setting the standard even if the players don’t.

A Canberra Raiders fan had $50? Did they rob a little old lady on the way to the game or something??

If I was a Storm player I would have walked over and taken the $50 and deposited it in a charity jar somewhere. Though, I suppose the fans of the other teams do need something to do other than cry when the Storm are thrashing their team, acting like apes is the logical thing to do instead..

You have a hell of a lot to say for a guy who recently demonstrated that he’s too stupid to understand the concept of irony.

Yes small sections of the crowd waved $50 notes at the players and taunted them about cheating. So what, they are grown men that cheated and nothing personal was levelled at them.

I was at the game, and the media reports are grossly overstated. In the lead up to the game the Melbourne Storm directors had announced they had mounted legal action against the NRL to reclaim “the premierships that were rightfully theirs.” There had been no remorse shown by the club, the players or their fans for what the Storm had done to the game.

During the game itself, the Storm resorted to dirty niggling tactics. They put several illegal tackles on Raiders players many of which went unpunished. They showed no regard for the safety of their opposition and were openly disrespectful towards the officials. Additionally, the Raiders had a fair try disallowed by the video referee while two questionable tries were awarded to the Storm (the referees chief has subsequently apologised to the Raiders).

All of this in an incredibly close game against a team $1mil over the salary cap. So when it was clear the Storm had won, having been awarded a dubious try by the video referee with 10 mintues to go, and the Storm players taunted the crowd, the crowd reponded by chanting “Cheats”. If you have a problem with that, you should avoid football matches and stick with the ballet.

If the Storm thought the Raiders crowd was hostile, they are in for a world of pain this Friday when they travel to Parramatta.

So just a question. Did any of the above posters actually attend the game in question, or are their lame derogatory comments based soley on News Limited propoganda?

Propaganda? So Raiders fans didn’t wave $50 notes and verbally abuse players? Those photos must’ve been doctored.

Yes i attended and yes everything that was reported happened.
Now I know this may come as a shock to some people, but this is not a new phenomenon. I’ve never been to a game of League, AFL, Rugby or Soccer where there wasn’t a level of abuse directed from the crowd towards opposition players. The Raiders fans just utilised some props (very inventive) and the Melbourne Storm salary cap rorts are a big story.

And Rugby League, have a sense of humor, come on.

Rugby League does have a sense of humour, the whole league is a joke in itself!

Well put sir.

Folau can certainly take a hanger btw.

A casual glance at the Raiders Army reveals a bunch of skinny twats to fearful of playing the game themselves and unlikely to disturb the skin on a custard in a fit of rage.

A personification of ‘those who can’t carry on the most’

Last season, I was unfortunate enough to have seats in the vicinity of the ‘Raiders Army’.
OK, it’s a bit loud and constant but it’s just a bit of fun and adds to the atmosphere right?

Wrong!

They were OK until the Raiders were losing. After this, the language that spewed out of these morons was enough to blister the paint off the goal posts. Not just the Fs and Cs that were being used but the vindictiveness with which it was directed towards the Raiders players was making most people there feel pretty uncomfortable. We also had a couple of sub-teen boys with us at the time.

I haven’t been back since this episode. If I do go back, and I’d like to, I’ll know better than to be seated anywhere near these boof-heads.

If you don’t want to hear F**ks and C#nts shouted from the crowd then maybe you should only go to Brumbies games, where the members shun anyone who even gets slightly vocal or involved in a match.
Raiders games are for letting your inner bogan out.

There were not untruths spoken that night. They are cheats.

there was a few dramas…

language? crash bang wallop! thugby league players and officials should be banned from public comments.

Oh, the poor little dears. Whatever happened to “sticks and stones…”

Storm will cop a lot of abuse from Eels fans this week (for obvious reasons), which will probably motivate the Storm to put 50 points on them.
