Raiders lose to Storm+Ref

I do try and keep these a little bit objective when I post them, but this time, I can’t help myself.

After a brilliant first half performance the Raiders were overcome by a better 2nd half performance by the Storm combined with the most disgraceful decision making I have seen from NRL officials at a live game – ever (and I’ve been to a few).

Two Storm tries came from garbage penalties, and whilst they continued to hold down and lie on top of our players after making a tackle they were never penalised for it – though the Raiders were (three times) for doing the same thing.

Once again the video ref failed to award benefit of the doubt to the Raiders after Colin Best scored in the corner. One frame shows the ball mm from the ground and his arm cm from touch – the next frame shows the ball easily grounded and his arm touching the sideline. How he could rule that he was out before he grounded it is beyond me.

Add to that the twenty or so times the Storm were blatantly offside, and you have your disgraceful decision making that by far and away was the biggest factor in the loss.

Having said that, the Raiders were not without their own mistakes in the second half – the most notable of which was Carney’s failure to find touch from a penalty – effectively giving the ball back to the Storm.

The Raiders have a bye next week and come back in Round 9 to take on the Warriors in New Zealand.

The next home game is against the Rabbitohs and the Refs on Sunday May 4 – kickoff at 4pm.

Whether you agree with the rule or not, it is the rule. It is consistently awarded to other teams, and consistently NOT awarded to the Raiders. This was yet another example.

That is complete and total rubbish. Not only was I there live, but I watched it on FOX as well – there is absolutely know way that the Raiders received a greater benefit from the decisions in the game, and absolutely no way were they infringing as much as Melbourne were.

boring game rugby league is *yawn* stop start stop start.

Then why, pray tell, did you go to the game?

someone strike up the violins for the poor raiders fan. yes we know you’re a one eyed raiders fan, we got that part. I watched it not going for either team and it was just as bad for both sides. Oh and they had a great picture with the guy “scoring the try” with his arm firmly on the line in the CT today too.

Why did I go? well my friends like it, I decided to be sociable, and it isn’t as boring as watching paint dry.. they do have the cheerleaders for entertainment 😉

aww another “the ref lost the game for us”.

What a load of bullsht. The video ref got it right, his arm was on the line when he grounded the ball, and if you were going to give anything the benefit of the doubt you would give it to the line. Anyway the “benefit of the doubt” rule for the attacking has to be the most rediculous rule in any sport i’ve seen. Why the hell would you have “oh he might have nearly kinda maybe scored so we will award the try anyway” rule? Load of crap that should be done away with.

There were bad calls on both sides which probably benefitted the raiders more, I give the crowd credit for trying to con the ref into making offside calls, especially when the raiders were just as close to being offside every time.

The Raiders and Raiders’ fans should be well used to shocking reffing decisions by now. I tend to take them in my stride these days… But I was rather horrified when the Storm kicked the field goal and the Raiders’ body language looked like they’d already lost the game – there were another 9 minutes to go!!!

Perhaps Toungey or Linc could have rallied the troups at this point if they’d been around. But generally we do seem to have problems with holding onto a lead, so – one for the sports psychologists I say.

Worst language I heard in Bay 70 was a 10 year old boy calling someone a f*cking c*nt, which seemed to amuse his parents no end…

I didn’t hear any racist chants though, but the 10 yr olds sitting near me were yelling “suck” after the “raiders” chant, and they were just as loud.. lol.

Woodgers

I have sat with and around you guys for years – there were one or two dickheads last night that carried on, and probably damaged your good name. I apologise if my general statement was taken as a shot at the entire group.

By the way – I’m far more beer lover than wowser and have fired up with passion at Raiders games since 1982…

Specific incidents – even if minor

Mick Crocker had a song about wife beating sung about him
Billy Slater had a song calling him a paedophile
The ref was referred to as a f**king faggot by some skanky mole a couple of rows back from me about 10 times.
And Israel Folou referred to as a f**king coconut – although that may not have been from the direction of the army.

I’m used to dumb spectators – the Penriff ferals last year that sat next to the Army and spent the entire game carrying on like porkchops, the Cnuterbury ferals who look to pick fights with opposition crowds. I’ve had beer cans thrown at me at Brookvale – its part of the game.

Most green army chants and songs are great and offer a hint of atmosphere which without you guys the place would lack – just sometimes a little tact might not go astray

I was in Bay 75. If the Raiders Army was the bunch of guys on my right leading the chants, the worst I heard from them was “You’re a wanker”, directed at the Referee. (Entirely justified at the time).

The Raiders, as always let themselves down when in with a chance. The half time standing ovation was a bad sign – the Raiders did not come out with the same intencity as they had in the first half.

Carneys penalty miss was crucial.

On a side note, the form of the Raiders cheersquad was ordinary – a choice selection of racist and homophobic chants for half the game might be funny in your loungeroom, but leave them to Penriff and Cnuterbury supporters…

The Crocker sledging was well deserved though!

Growling Ferret,

As a main organiser of the Raiders Army I am rather concerned with your post. Someone alerted it to me earlier today and I asked around, no one has any idea what the allegations of racist or homophobic chants are about. That certainly is not something we condone at all. Members of the group are from all different backgrounds, for example the bloke who does the pics for us is from Hong Kong. I wouldn’t allow it. I certainly wouldn’t allow homophobic comments or chants either as I have a Brother who is part of that community. I’m happy to discuss further mate but I think your comment is unwarranted and completely incorrect. As usual I was in the middle of the group in Bay 72 last night and didn’t hear any of the things you allude to so to tarnish the entire group on an open forum with the comment that half the night was spent doing these things is completely misleading.

This was the first ever Raider’s game I attended. Great ground. Great atmosphere.

My thoughts;
-Shoot the ref.
-Sack that dozy no. 10 (Ilse or Isle?)
-Abduct Billy Slater at gunpoint.

Haven’t you seen the Benefit of the Doubt Rule (08 change)

The benefit of the doubt will go to the side
a) higher on the ladder
b) more likely to draw higher ratings come finals time
c) not the Canberra Raiders

hah – I must have missed that at the season launch… 😉

The Raiders looked spent by the time the Storm had evened the scores, who in turn looked more lively than ever once they were in with a chance

Successive sets of six in defence due to inexplicable calls from the ref (plus Carney failing to find touch) will and did drain the Raiders of much of their energy.

I think the Storm picked up when they realised they’d picked up four more players (three in white on the field and the moron – Bill Harrigan by the way – in the video ref box).

The Raiders looked spent by the time the Storm had evened the scores, who in turn looked more lively than ever once they were in with a chance. From that point on it seemed that the Raiders were going to struggle to land any more points. Nevertheless, it was a pretty good game. Fortunately I did not hear any unacceptable chanting from the crowd, but I was sitting fairly high up in the stands.

Yeah – no problems with being called Cam, as per the post above yours. I’m just too stupid to realise I’m posting as “Cameron”. Excellent.

Slater scored after the Best try was denied.

What makes the video ref call soooooo frustrating is that it is the second try in three weeks for Best that was denied because the video ref failed to apply the benefit of the doubt rule (which says that in the absence of conclusive evidence the attacking team receives benefit).

We are all on riotact – thus all friends 😉
Except for Maelinar. Nobody likes that guy except for Thumper and Ralph.

Anyway, back to the game

The Raiders heads dropped as soon as Slater scored. I saw the replay of the Best no try, and reckon it was a bad call, but not the worst of the weekend (see Cooper on Saturday night for that one) The Storm are a class outfit. And the Raiders are a lot better than the worst teams in the comp and won’t win the spoon…

ahah – ignore the “Cam” and my question as to whether I knew you – I thought I was posting here under “in2itive” and thus thought “How does GF know my name”?

Cam = idiot.

Cheers.

“Cam”

Do I know you?

“The Raiders. as always, let themselves down when in with a chance.”

Yes. See my comments on their second half mistakes.

“The half time standing ovation was a bad sign – the Raiders did not come out with the same intencity as they had in the first half.”

I couldn’t disagree more. The first 10 minutes or so of the first half they were just an intense – the no-try try and successive garbage penalties definitively killed their momentum. No question a better team would have handled it better, but that doesn’t make it okay.

Re: the cheersquad – you mean the Raiders Army? I couldn’t hear them, what were they saying?
