Raiders membership?

My girlfriend bought me a Raiders Gold Membership (I think) for Christmas – a pressie that cost a pretty penny. She bought it a few weeks before Christmas, and after a few hassles with the Raiders (including them changing their phone number and not updating their website with their new one) it arrived yesterday.

I have been a member for the past two years, and have been impressed with the Raiders merchandise for members – scarves, beanies, caps, stickers, key rings and cooler bags have all found their merry way into my house.

This year, for the low low price of $230, the merchandise pack consists of:

– 1 baseball hat, straight from the sweatshops of Vietnam

– 1 sticker

– 1 lanyard

– 1 keyring with Victor the Viking, made of the same high-quality plastic that I remember my first police badge was made out of at age 5.

– 1 “boot bag” that looks more like a clutch purse. I do not play football, and rarely find myself requiring an extra pair of shoes too often. And when I do, I doubt that this bag would be big enough to handle a pair of thongs.

The membership page on the website still listed the 2011 membership merchandise (until today, apprently) instead of the 2012 treasure trove of plastic goodness that appears was picked out by someone who has never spent a Friday night at Canberra Stadium in the middle of winter.

I don’t want to sound like a miserable, jaded old Raiders fan, but if they are serious about building their membership numbers, gaining respect and becoming a professional outfit once again, I would wholeheartedly suggest upgrading their marketing and merchandise. When asked about scarves, the Raiders response was “there’s a new NRL outlet open in Woden, you can probably buy one there.”

It’ll be sad if the Raiders can’t afford to remain in the NRL, but if they continue to treat their fans this way, they’ll have no one to blame but themselves.

PS. $40 to get into the ground for non-members? No wonder you only get 50 people turning up to games.

There’s no time for any of that mate. I’m totally preoccupied with the fact that my free Raiders “boot bag” looks too much like a clutch purse and is too small for the second pair of shoes that I never actually need.

Surprised you didn’t mention the need for flat taxation. Isn’t that more your idée fixe than these ‘bleeding heart’ issues?

The issues are real enough. The problem is that people like yourself advocate endless taxing and spending by government to fix them.

Nothing would get me to a League game, regardless of the show-bags, but that’s just a personal preference.

I’m so sick of people using arguments like this as a means of countering a post on here.

You may not ever whinge about anything ever because there is a third world. Stupid.

You have never complained about anything ever I assume?

That lanyard sounds pretty sweet.

I don’t want to make rash generalisations about the people of Canberra or their occupations, but I daresay that your workplace has given you a better one.

I appreciate your confidence in my career.

Sorry tiger – why are you commenting on a forum about rugby league? Surely you have some gay whales to give land rights to?

I believe this begs the question: what are you doing about the three issues mentioned? Could it be a touch of chardonnay socialism?

I remember, as a kid, we used to go and watch the Sydney Swans play in Sydney for free becuase they were so woefully bad that they would just open the gates to everyone to try and get people in the staduim. Even when it was free, I remember a few times that we would sit down and have no one within 20 metres of us in the grandstands the the entire stadium was nearly empty.

Ahh, the joys of the early 90s, when one would wander through Kings Cross, stop at Hungry Jacks, buy the cheapest burger and receive a ticket to the Swans. A few travellers for the walk to the SCG and it was a grand day. Particularly if you weren’t a Swans fan, as you could look forward to mocking the legion of Red and White wallies as they filed sullen faced and quiet from the ground. 🙂

The Raiders averaged what?, 12500 people last year?
Brumbies, 13 000?

In a stadium that fits 25 000.

I honestly don’t think cost is the major factor in these crowd numbers, rather the woeful standard that both teams played at.

Maybe dropping their prices would increase crowds but I doubt it.

As a comparison – $42.50 for a family of 4 to attend a Big Bash game in Sydney. Excellent live entertainment for three hours for less than it costs to go to the movies.

First season of big bash though.
They’re keeping the prices low to try and build a following and they’ve also been trying to sell it as a drawcard on FOXTEL

Just wait, those prices won’t be around for long, not with the money the players are getting paid.

Not to mention the free keyring not being the same quality as the fine keyrings of yesteryear. How disrespectful to fans! Seriously, if the current, low-quality keyrings mean that the Raiders can’t stay in the NRL – a huge risk, I’m sure you’ll agree – they’ll only have themselves to blame.

People support the raiders?

Well isn’t today just full of surprises!

They may have got those numbers by counting all the players, support staff, ground staff, food stall staff, police, paramedics and bus drivers. If you sit in the ground, I’d say the actual numbers would be much much less, even less with the number of tickets they give away.

Anyway, the cheap members kit is pretty much standard from what I have seen across many teams. Probably made worse by the Raiders not having a jumper sponsor..

So you’re paying less than $20 a game to go to the footy and you expect a massive bag of goodies as well?

Yes.

If they charged everyone $20 a game to go to the footy, they’d see an additional 10,000 people there every week.

That lanyard sounds pretty sweet.

Yes.

You’re making out like $20 per game is a bargain in itself. It’s the footy! $20 for you, $20 for your wife, $12 or so for your two kids. A couple of pies, maybe a beer. You’re not getting a whole lot of change out of $100. As a member, you’re doing that for a dozen games (assuming you don’t miss some games, in which case the average match ticket price increases). Maybe for that commitment, they could not cut corners by reducing the quality in the gifts that they give you to say thank you for making such a commitment.

I won’t listen to the Raiders and Brumbies whinge about dwindling crowd numbers until they drastically reduce the price of tickets.

I love the Brumbies, but I have no issues with buying a kids ticket online, using that, and saving myself over 65% on my ticket price.

Well, for that $230, you also get entry to 12 home games.

You also have to consider the price of memberships for other clubs. After a few frantic minutes of googling, these are the cheapest equivalent adult memberships (close to the action, reserved seats) for the other clubs;

Broncos: $255
Bulldogs: $330
Raiders: $230
Cowboys: $175
Titans: $290
Eagles: $210 (but only 10 games)
Storm: $285
Knights: $260
Eels:$220
Panthers: $220
Sharks: $280 (!)
Rabbitohs: Membership site not functioning
Dragons: $305
Roosters: $260
Warriors: $300 (not sure if NZ dollars)
Tigers: $330

So, you’re actually getting the third cheapest season ticket available. Not too shabby.

It’s not specifically the price that I was having a whinge about, it was more the way that the members are being treated. I am more than happy to have entry into the games, but I would actually prefer no merchandise to the shoddy stuff they’re offering this year. I know for a fact that other clubs have some great membership merchandise (then again, it probably helps when there’s a Hollywood superstar supporting the club), maybe I’m just a bit miffed by “small club syndrome.”

So you’re paying less than $20 a game to go to the footy and you expect a massive bag of goodies as well?

“there’s a new NRL outlet open in Woden, you can probably buy one there.”

There is, but they don’t have beanies or scarves (yet) only caps – I checked over Christmas. When I asked the sales staff if they would ever have them they couldn’t tell me. Just an FYI if you are thinking of heading there!

Cheaper than the Brumbies.

$280 ($245 for renewing members) for Snowy River membership, which gets you:
– Personalised 2012 Membership Card (I will admit that his part makes me giggle. It’s the same card everyone gets, but with you name and seat printed on it)
– Exclusive 2012 Member Cap
– 2012 Brumbies Season Guide
– 2012 Fixture Card
– 2012 Fridge Magnet
– 2012 Member Bumper Sticker
– Priority Purchase of Super Rugby finals tickets (home games only) (This will come in handy if by some chance we make the finals. It does not guarantee your season seat though.)
– Priority purchase on tickets to the Wallabies test matches played in Sydney in 2012 (v Wales 23 Jun; v All Blacks 18 Aug)
– Discount on renewal of Membership for 2013
– 10% discount on Brumbies merchandise from BrumbiesHQ
– Exclusive Member Only offers from our sponsors and partners
– Entry to the exclusive Member’s Lounge post match at Canberra Stadium
– Invitation to the Annual ActewAGL Meet the Players Day
– Subscription to B-Mail

Maybe I should become a Raiders member… nah, I’m not classy enough 🙂

I used to buy the Green Eyed membership each year, until one year I was unable to go to any of the home games for most of the season due to work. I rocked up to the second last home match with my season ticket, only to found they had sold my seat to someone else with a last 6 games membership.

I sent off a formal complaint that same weekend, and after receiving a piss weak apology have never brought a ticket for a home match or any merch. I’ll always support the team, but like many others I refuse to give the organisation any of my hard earned cash until they change management.
