Raiders prove the doubters wrong

I like many many others had tipped Manly to beat the Raiders on Saturday night. Betting markets also agreed, with Manly the shortest-priced favourites in round one. However, even with three debutants in the side the Raiders managed to gain an upset 27-14 win over Manly. Halves combination Lincoln Withers and veteran Jason Smith (who has a birthday tomorrow) torched the Manly defence.

However, Josh Miller suffered a season-ending knee injury. Hopefully the injury curse will not befall the Raiders again this season.

Well done.

I have to say I really don’t care about Matthew Elliot leaving. My prediction is that he’ll get the boot from Penrith before his contract is out. They’ve got a few good players left over from their grand final win a few years ago but they are all approaching the end of their careers. I doubt he’ll get Penrith back to a premiership winning side. He couldn’t do it with the Raiders…..

If the Raiders management have any sense they will get Chris Anderson as coach. One of the world’s best coaches and far better than Elliot. This will also help to attract quality players to Canberra. And my other prediction is that Jamie Lyon will go to Manly (which in itself will warrant a salary cap investigation of the silvertails). Any suggestion they can get Matt Giteau is just beating off.

Welcome back Ralph – it’s been a long off season.

Raiders did well, but I don’t think we can afford to call any win an upset this early on in the piece. I think the next few weeks will hold more than a few surprises for us all – here’s hoping the green machine can get back on board.

Incidentally what are the thoughts on Matt Elliot leaving us at the end of the year – I know we had a post on it a few weeks ago, but now we’ve had more time to mull it all over.

And who is the hot tip to replace Elliot?

Jason Smith is a legend. I saw him yesterday sipping on schooners and sucking back the durries with another senior team mate – if that’s not inspirational, I don’t know what is 😉

He is the most influential 5/8 in the NRL – with him the Raiders win, without him they almost always lose…

I really feel for Josh Miller. I’m sure that he would have been a shoe in for Country Origin selection this year.

Though I’m far away, my heart still bleeds green!!!
